Greece holiday confusion as tourism officials say entry rules ‘won’t change’ this weekend

Confusion reigns over travel rules for Greece holidays this spring and summer, as the tourist board says the country’s current border restrictions won’t be eased from 1 May - despite the Greek health minister saying that present Covid rules would be suspended from May to August.

On 12 April, health minister Thanos Plevris appeared on Skai TV saying that Covid cases had declined enough “to proceed with the suspension of the protection measures put in place, from 1 May.”

Local and international press alike took this to mean all remaining Covid measures - including the domestic use of vaccine certificates to access venues, indoor mask-wearing, and the requirement to show either a vaccine certificate or PCR test result to enter Greece - would be lifted.

Mr Plevris emphasised that the move would be a suspension rather than a firm end to restrictions, saying, “The measures will be reviewed again in September.”

However, the Greek government later clarified that indoor mask-wearing would remain until 1 June - and the country’s tourist board is now saying that entry restrictions will not be eased this Sunday.

Arrived Kef on Tues and not asked for Covid certificate either leaving UK, or arriving Kef - complete contrast to visit last autumn, where both certificate and PLF scrutinised.

Not many tourist eateries open, but the few we have visited seem very laissez-faire re masks

Most people in supermarkets with just a single mask, not the double we understood to be the requirement

Covid Pass to be suspended on May 1

The scientific committee advising the government on the course of the pandemic convened on Thursday and greenlit the suspension of Greece’s Covid Pass program from May 1, allowing free entry into Greece for without the display of an EU Digital Covid Certificate.

Other approved measures include increasing capacity to 100%, the reduction of required rapid tests for unvaccinated employees, including teachers, to one per week (with the exception of those employed by hospitals and those who work with the elderly who will still need two).

Greece Drops Covid-19 Requirements for Country Entry

As of May 1, travelers coming to Greece will no longer be required to display an EU Digital Covid Certificate (EUDCC), recovery certificate, or test to enter the country, the Greek Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

More specifically, the government’s Covid committee decided unanimously starting May 1:

– travelers to Greece will be able to enter the country without presenting a digital covid certificate which indicates whether someone has been vaccinated against Covid-19, a recovery certificate or a negative test

– admission to restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and entertainment venues will be allowed to all. The vaccination certificate, test or proof of recovery requirement has been dropped

– restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and entertainment venues will be able to operate at full (100 percent) capacity

– mask wearing outdoors is no longer necessary but the Covid committee strongly advises the use of face masks indoors
