Microsoft will end support for ‘the last version of Windows’ in October 2025
Windows 10 was originally thought of as the ‘last version of Windows’, but Microsoft will be issuing an update soon

Microsoft is ending its support for Windows 10 in 2025, indicating that the company is moving towards a new operating system.

A new support document says that Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro was launched on 29 July 2015, and will retire on 14 October 2025. It appears to be the first time the company has described ending support for the operating system.

Microsoft has been preparing to launch the next version of its Windows operating soon, likely to be called Windows 11.

Microsoft will be unveiling the next version of Windows on 24 July.

If it matters to anyone, I think that's 24 June, not July. If it's any interest to anyone (not me), Microsoft are holding a livestream announcement at 11:00 Eastern Time. I reckon that's 16:00 BST / 18:00 EEST: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/event

Microsoft unveils Windows 11

Microsoft has unveiled Windows 11, its "next generation" operating system, at a virtual event.

The new software will let Android apps run on the Windows desktop.

Product manager Panos Panay promised smaller, faster security updates - a common complaint for Windows users - and said they would happen in the background.

Windows 11 will also let users configure multiple desktops for work, home, and gaming, like on a Mac.

Microsoft says there are currently about 1.3 billion devices running Windows 10.

Windows 11 will be available as a free update to existing Windows 10 users - although some devices will not have the right specifications. These include a minimum of 64 gigabytes of storage and 4 gigabytes of RAM.

A worrying number of references to needing a Microsoft account, as that's the essential precursor to Windows moving to a subscription based service, a la Office365 and Adobe products

Windows 11 Won’t Be a Forced Upgrade for Windows 10 Users

Microsoft has already confirmed that Windows 11 would be offered as a free upgrade for certain eligible Windows 10 devices, and now the company has returned with additional information on how this release is supposed to take place.

Microsoft explains that Windows 11 will land via Windows Update on Windows 10 devices, but to get the update, users need to manually check for updates on their devices.

In other words, Windows 11 won’t be a forced upgrade on Windows 10 devices, so if you want to remain on the current operating system, that’s quite alright.

Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 2025, so if you don’t want to make the switch to Windows 11, your computer will still get security updates and other improvements for four more years.

Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 downloads on 31 January, anyone who wants/needs to buy Windows 10 after this date may find it still available for a while from third-party sellers with surplus stock.

Anyone buying a new PC with Windows 10 pre-installed may want to check the device can be upgraded, free of charge, to Windows 11, as Windows 10 is still due to reach end of support in less that three years from now, on 14 October, 2025: microsoft.com

Microsoft to also sell Windows 10 Extended Security Updates to home users

Microsoft says that all Windows 10 customers will be able to buy three extra years of security updates through the company’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program after the end of support (EOS) date.

After Windows 10 reaches the end of support on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide users with technical assistance or bug fixes for new issues affecting their systems' security, stability, or usability.

The upcoming Windows 10 22H2 version is the final Windows release, with all editions to continue to receive monthly security updates until the EOS date.

According to Statcounter Global Stats data, over 68% of all Windows systems are still running Windows 10, while only 26% of them run Windows 11.

Customers who don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 or who don't have an eligible device can subscribe to the upcoming ESU program.

However, Redmond has yet to share pricing details, with more information to be announced later.
