Nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, two on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8763 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1018 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1412 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9076 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Record-breaking vampires at Whitby Abbey mark 125 years of Dracula

A fanged crowd of 1,369 broke the Guinness World Record for vampire gatherings in celebration of Bram Stoker’s classic novel

The aim was to gather at least 1,040 people in the Abbey dressed as vampires, thus breaking a record set in 2011 at an amusement park in Doswell, Virginia. The Whitby effort was timed to mark the precise 125th anniversary of the publication of Dracula.

Police dog dies of heart failure chasing moped thieves

A police dog known for having a "larger than life character" has died after chasing down two moped thieves, the Metropolitan Police said.

Six-year-old PD Xavier Charles, better known as "Stanley", collapsed on Sunday morning while on duty.

The dog, who worked across London as a general purpose and firearms support animal, was described as "one of the very best police dogs" by the force.

The Met Police believe Stanley died from heart failure after collapsing on a job.

Seagulls nesting on police car put vehicle out of action

A police car has been put out of action after a pair of protected seagulls started nesting on its roof.

Officers are unable to clear the clump of twigs and branches because it is illegal to damage or destroy a birds' nest under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Instead, they have coned off the patrol car in the seaside town of Bridport, Dorset, to keep members of the public away from it.

A spokesman for the RSPB said they were reassured that the birds would be safe while under police protection.

However, as the nesting season for seagulls runs until July, the squad car could be out of use for months.

The herring gulls have propped up their nest against the long blue strobe light fixed to the roof. They have been observed coming and going from it as they prepare to lay and incubate their eggs.

Sue Gray report: Tory MP quits as Patel’s aide over ‘toxic culture’ at No 10

Boris Johnson has suffered the first resignation of a frontbencher since Sue Gray’s damning report into Partygate was published, with Paul Holmes quitting as a ministerial aide to the home secretary.

In a statement to his Eastleigh constituents, Holmes said his work as an MP “has been tarnished by the toxic culture that seemed to have permeated Number 10”.

Holmes did not say whether he wanted Johnson to resign, or if he had submitted a no confidence letter – 54 of which are needed to trigger a vote on the prime minister’s premiership.

Ainos National Park management committee have decided to prohibit access to the park to vehicles and pedestrians from sunset to sunrise next day throughout the 2022 fire season.

As usual, a total ban on entry will be imposed whenever the General Secretariat for Civil Protection fire risk prediction map shows a hazard category 4 (Very High) or category 5 (Alarm) for Kefalonia.

Ferry Boat Fares to the Greek Islands Up by 15%

The cost of traveling by ferry boat to the Greek islands has increased by around 15 percent, said Greek Shipping Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis this week.

Speaking on public radio, Plakiotakis confirmed that fares were up by 10-15 percent this year compared to 2021, attributing the hikes to massive increases in fuel prices.

Court fight looms over Sainsbury's cat ban

A man with autism is taking supermarket giant Sainsbury's to court for refusing entry to his assistance cat.

Designer and writer Ian Fenn from London says the ban on Chloe, who helps him in daily life, is limiting his independence.

He says she helps him stay calm, but the supermarket argues that cats, unlike assistance dogs, present risks to food hygiene.

The case might set a legal precedent if it has to be ruled on by top judges.

Sainsbury's says it is working with an environmental health team to find out how Ian and his cat can visit safely.

There have been assistance horses in service in the UK - but it has been a much hotter topic in the United States.

Four years ago, American airlines recorded 751,000 requests to take emotional support animals on flights - including miniature horses and a turkey. The matter turned into a national media debate when a passenger was banned from taking their support peacock on a plane.

Ultimately, the US's national air transport rules were tightened up to ban emotional support animals other than dogs.

Boris Johnson accused of changing ministerial code to ‘save his skin’
Rewritten rules remove need to resign – instead ministers can apologise or temporarily lose pay for breaches

Boris Johnson has been accused of changing the ministerial code to help “save his skin” ahead of a new Partygate inquiry that could publish more photos and subject him to a public grilling by MPs.

The prime minister faced a barrage of criticism after he amended the rules on Friday to make clear that ministers will not always be expected to resign for breaching the code of conduct. Under new sanctions, they could apologise or temporarily lose their pay instead.

Johnson also blocked his independent ethics chief, Christopher Geidt, from gaining the power to launch his own investigations, and rewrote the foreword to the ministerial code, removing all references to honesty, integrity, transparency and accountability.

"removing all references to honesty, integrity, transparency and accountability" - he had to look those up in a dictionary?
