Kef fire risk 24/05/23: Low (https://civilprotection.gov.gr/arxeio-imerision-xartwn?field_imerominia_harti_value=05%2F24%2F2023)
Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8960 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1102 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1161 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9007 €UR
Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Two Danish tourists have been arrested by the police on the island of Zakynthos for endangering a minor. According to the public broadcaster ERT, a 34-year-old mother and her 31-year-old partner left their one-year-old baby locked inside a rented car while they went shopping on the pedestrian street of Tsilivi, a popular tourist resort.
Alerted by concerned local residents who noticed the infant inside the vehicle, the police swiftly responded and freed the child from the car.

Greece appoints caretaker PM ahead of June election
Greece’s president appointed a caretaker prime minister on Wednesday to form a government that will lead the country to a repeat election on June 25, after last weekend’s inconclusive vote.
Mitsotakis believes a second vote, which gives the leading party bonus seats, will give New Democracy the majority needed to rule alone.
Under Greece’s electoral system, the winner of a second vote following an inconclusive first election can receive up to 50 bonus seats for every point it wins beyond 25%.

Staff shortages jeopardize healthcare on islands
Shortly before the summer season, public hospital workers are reporting significant shortages in essential medical specialties in health centers and hospitals on the Greek islands. They are calling upon the next government to prioritize the staffing of these positions.
“The staffing problem is worsening by the day,” says Michalis Giannakos, president of the union representing Greek public hospital staff (POEDIN). “How can nurses be interested in a job at an island hospital or health center with a monthly salary of €800 when their place of residence is in another area? Rent and food costs alone far exceed their salaries,” he explains.

Ancient Greek coin sells for record price at Swiss auction
A rare ancient Greek coin fetched a record-breaking six million dollars at an auction held on May 19 at the Numismatica Ars Classica auction house in Zurich.
The 2,400-year-old gold stater, minted around 340–25 B.C.E., was bought by a private collector, Artnet Magazine reported.
Known as a Panticapaeum stater, after the ancient Greek city in modern-day Crimea, it features a wide-eyed satyr on the obverse and that of a griffin gripping a spear in its beak on the reverse.
The high price is attributed to the coin’s quality, rarity, and the fact the supply of similar specimens is extremely limited.
