Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9079 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1301 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1014 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8849 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Overtourism in Greece Makes Travelers Change Vacation Dates

According to recently released survey data, European travelers are increasingly avoiding trips to Greece during the peak season due to overtourism.

August is a particularly busy month, but more and more tourists are opting to visit Greece at different times in the year to avoid overcrowded beaches, hotels, and cultural attractions.

Greek Cup final to be held in Greece with limited spectators

The Greek Cup final between AEK Athens and PAOK will be held in the central Greek city of Volos next month, with a limited number of spectators by invitation only.

According to AP News, the decision to limit spectators comes due to a fear of fan violence. Professional Greek soccer has been plagued by fan violence for decades — including at last year’s cup final.

UK inflation: Supermarkets say price rises will ease soon

A drop in the cost of wholesale food prices globally has not led to falls in the prices charged by UK supermarkets.

Inflation was expected to fall below 10% last month but soaring food prices meant it fell by less than expected.

"You would expect to see [global food price falls] reflected in supermarkets but we're not there yet," the Office for National Statistics told the BBC.

The retail industry body said there was a three to nine-month lag to see price falls reflected in shops.

New Zealand cat-killing competition for children scrapped after animal welfare outcry

A hunting competition in New Zealand has faced backlash for inviting children to kill as many feral cats as possible for a cash prize.

An annual hunt is organised by The North Canterbury Hunting Competition, where hundreds of entrants - adults and children - compete to kill wild pigs, deer and hares.

A new category was suggested this year encouraging children under 14 to hunt feral cats for a $250 prize, but it was soon cancelled after outcry from animal welfare groups.

New Zealand's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in Canterbury took to social media to condemn the plan, saying: "It’s not possible to tell the difference between a feral, stray or frightened domestic cat based on appearance, so there is a good chance someone’s pet may be killed during this event."

The volume of feral cats is considered a widespread issue in New Zealand as they continue to decimate local wildlife.

They feed on rabbits, birds and bird eggs, rats, hares, bats, lizards, mice, and more.

Mischievous goats given freedom to terrorise seaside town

The animals have been devouring garden hedges, munching flowers, running wild in the streets and even fighting in supermarket car parks.

But council chiefs say the animals are not their responsibility because they are roaming free, and landowners are responsible for protecting their gardens and plots.

The Conwy Council report reads: "The goats of Llandudno have roamed in a wild state for over 100 years and were originally a gift to Lord Mostyn from Queen Victoria."

Google patches another actively exploited Chrome zero-day

Google has released a security update for the Chrome web browser to fix the second zero-day vulnerability found to be exploited in attacks this year.

The new version is 112.0.5615.137 and fixes a total of eight vulnerabilities. The stable release is available only for Windows and Mac users, with the Linux version to roll out "soon," Google says.

To start the Chrome update procedure manually to the latest version that addresses the actively exploited security issue, head to the Chrome settings menu (upper right corner) and select Help → About Google Chrome.

Otherwise, the updates are installed the next time the browser starts without requiring user intervention. Relaunching the application is required to complete the update.

Castle of Zakynthos to Be Restored

The Culture Ministry announced on Wednesday that restoration works will be carried out inside the Castle of Zakynthos to preserve and promote the buildings and structures of the eras of Venetian and British rule. The ministry said the studies for the restoration works were approved by the Central Antiquities Council.

The exact date when the Venetian Castle was first built is not known with certainty, but it is believed it was in 1480, soon after the Venetians occupied the island. Under the Venetians, the Castle was the capital of Zakynthos. Soon after it was built, the castle was destroyed by invading Turks. In 1514, it was repaired, again by the Venetians. The strong earthquakes that have frequently struck the island destroyed the fortifications so often that they had to be constantly rebuilt. The construction of the walls and the Fortress defensive system, which are still preserved today, was completed in 1646 when proveditor general da mar was Iohannem Battista Grimani. An important program of conservation of the Castle was carried out by the English in 1812 while they were in control of the island. The sewage and water supply systems were created in that period. Recent excavations at the Venetian Castle have found monuments from the Byzantine period, including a church dating back to the 12th century.

Child-devouring pothole will never hurt a BMW driver again
Unfortunately...

Drivers the length of Great Britain will sympathize with residents of Canning Town in London who, until Sunday, were believed to host the deepest pothole in the country.

How deep are we talking? Well, if you dropped a child in, good luck getting them back.

Newham Council was indignant. "This is not a pothole. A 5ft deep sinkhole appeared overnight," a spokesman said.

No children were harmed in the making of this article.
