Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9080 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1272 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1013 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8872 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Electricity rates coming down in May

Electricity suppliers announced on Friday lower bills for May, with prices very close to the target set by the government for final charges to consumers.

More specifically, Public Power Corporation reported a charge of 15.9 cents per kilowatt-hour for energy consumption up to 500 KWh, down from 16.5 cents in April).

The Greek Garden Trend That Will Be Everywhere In Spring 2023

Landscape designers have been taking inspiration from Greek gardens for years, but now it's becoming more of a trend as more people adopt aspects of the serene Mediterranean country in their own space. The stunning blooming flowers and crisp white buildings of seaside Greek towns have been the travel inspiration for many people for years. But since hopping on a plane to Greece to relax in the fresh air isn't always possible, garden designers are bringing some of the beauty of Greece into the backyards of our homes. No matter how large of a yard you have, you can recreate Greece's dreamy and romantic location in your own outdoor space.

Ambulance service spends £31m on Mustangs while locked in pay dispute with paramedics
A fleet of 42 Ford Mustang Mach-Es, worth up to £74,000 each, will be used as fast-response vehicles across the capital

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) is buying a fleet of electric Ford Mustangs as part of a £31 million “green up” mission while paramedics remain locked in a dispute over pay.

The 42 cars, worth up to £74,000 each, will be used as fast-response vehicles across the capital.

Seven of the “iconic cars” are already in use as part of the service’s plans to modernise its vehicles, but a further 35 will now be rolled out.

Rare white peacock left fighting for life after hit-and-run

A rare white peacock was left fighting for its life after a driver appeared to deliberately hit it.

Snowy, who lives at Normanby Hall Country Park in Lincolnshire, was rushed to a vet after being injured in the neck and leg.

Roofers working on a cottage near the estate reportedly said on Thursday that they saw a car swerve to hit the peacock, which is much loved by visitors and staff.

Calories key to longevity, study finds

The enzyme responsible for the reliable transcription of cells, as the copying of information from DNA is called, lies behind aging, according to researchers at German institutes.

A group of researchers, including five Greeks, discovered that the RNA polymerase responsible for cell transcription moves along the DNA faster in aged cells than in young cells, resulting in more errors in the process.

The expectation is that simple interventions will restore transcription speed to normal levels. These include diet, particularly the number of calories consumed per day, which can affect transcription and improve the function of aged cells.

The floating summer holiday circus in Greece that wants to change the world through play
The Sea Clown Sailing Circus will be performing at Greek resorts and ports throughout summer – and fighting for our fragile marine ecosystem

Each summer as tourists flock to Greece to island-hop and lie on silk sand beaches, a global band of skilled circus performers and musicians set sail on the same waters for a different purpose.

They believe their shows, which include fire-eating, clowning and tightrope walking, can help change the world by conveying a serious message in a playful way.

The Sea Clown Sailing Circus is performing all summer in sleepy fishing ports and lively seaside resorts throughout Greece and its 300 inhabited islands. As it tacks back and forth across dolphin-studded seas, the international group hopes to encourage others to respect the fragile marine ecosystem that covers two thirds of the earth’s surface.

Netflix forced to disable comments on Cleopatra trailer after global backlash

Netflix has been accused of ‘blackwashing’ history by casting a black actress as Cleopatra in a new docuseries about the Macedonian-Greek ruler of Egypt. African Queens: Queen Cleopatra stars 37-year-old English actress Adele James. Producer Jada Pinkett Smith said she wanted to tell the story because ‘we don’t often get to see or hear stories about black queens.’

The trailer released last week features claims that Cleopatra was black with ‘curly hair.’ One historian asserts in the preview: ‘I remember my grandmother saying to me: I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black.’ But Egyptians have reacted with horror to the denial of records which show Cleopatra was Macedonian-Greek. An Egyptian lawyer has filed a case with the country’s public prosecutor demanding that Netflix be shut down.

Meanwhile, Cairo’s former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass condemned the documentary as ‘completely fake. Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was light-skinned, not black.’ Hawass said the only rulers of Egypt known to have been black were the Kushite kings of the 25th Dynasty (747-656 BC).

On Sunday, lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary filed a complaint with the public prosecutor demanding that he take ‘the necessary legal measures’ to block access to Netflix. He alleged the show featured content that violated Egypt’s media laws and accused Netflix of trying to ‘promote the Afrocentric thinking … which includes slogans and writings aimed at distorting and erasing the Egyptian identity.’

Mykonos bar fined €33 mln

A cumulative fine imposed on a beach bar in the Panormos area of Mykonos island came to a whopping 33 million euros, according to reports.

An amount of €22.5 million concerns the fine for the construction of unauthorized structures and a further €11 million is for keeping them in place. In other words, for every year that passes and the owners do not take down the structures classified as illegal, the property will be required to pay a fine of 11 million euros starting this year.

The owner has the right to appeal within 10 days. Once finalized, the law allows for the suspension of the business if the owner does not proceed with the demolition of the illegal/unauthorized structures.

In addition to the fine imposed on this particular establishment, a demolition order for unauthorized structures at a beach bar at Psarou was signed on Friday.
