Kef fire risk 05/05/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9066 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1406 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1030 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8767 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Local communities are saying, ‘Enough is enough’

Local communities are starting to shout: “Enough is enough! We cannot take any more visitors,” but the visitors just keep coming, hypnotized by the beauty and blind to the ugliness.

Nearly 70% Of Greeks Think A Woman’s Place Is In The Kitchen

A recent Eurobarometer poll found that nearly 70% of Greeks agreed with the statement that "the most important role of a woman is to take care of her home and family," the highest of a non-ex-communist country in Europe.

The most impressive thing is that in many countries, including Greece, women also give similar answers.

In contrast to the male stereotype that “the most important role of a man is to make money”, the Greeks again supported the opinion at 65%, while the European average is 43%.

Greece launches EUR-238m rooftop solar subsidy programme

The Greek government has officially fired the starting gun of a EUR-238-million (USD 261.8m) programme that will subsidise the installation of rooftop solar systems coupled with battery storage.

The programme, dubbed Photovoltaics on the Roof, is open to households and professional farmers. The Ministry of Environment and Energy started accepting applications on May 2 through an online platform, which will remain open until the depletion of available resources. The programme’s closing deadline is set for the end of June 2024.

TikTok tracked UK journalist via her cat's account

Two days before Christmas, TikTok called London-based journalist Cristina Criddle to tell her two of its employees in China, and two in the US, had viewed user data from her personal account without her knowledge or consent.

Cristina's TikTok account was on her personal mobile handset - and in the name of her cat, Buffy. Her own name and occupation were not mentioned in the bio.

Like most social-media networks, TikTok collects quite a lot of information about its account holders, including:

    location data
    "likes"
    the device being used
online activity outside of the platform itself

Question Boris Johnson for ‘not wearing a seatbelt’, Lib Dems urge police

Police are being urged to investigate a “potential breach of the law” after footage appeared to show Boris Johnson appealing to Tory supporters from a moving car while not wearing a seatbelt.

In a video circulating on social media, the former prime minister is heard urging Derbyshire Conservatives to “get as many people as possible to turn out and vote for us” ahead of the local elections.

The clip, which lasts 42 seconds and appears to be self-recorded, shows Mr Johnson delivering an optimistic message to party advocates from what looks to be the backseat of a moving vehicle.

He does not seem to be wearing a seatbelt, prompting the Liberal Democrats to call for a police investigation.

The video featuring Mr Johnson was said to have been shared on Twitter by Derby North MP Amanda Solloway but appears to have since been deleted.

Derbyshire Police said there is “no information” to suggest the former Tory leader filmed the video while in the county.

Animal tests for makeup resume after 25-year ban

The government has allowed animal testing for makeup ingredients to resume despite a 25-year ban.

It changed a policy on animal testing to align with EU chemical rules, according to a High Court ruling.

The High Court said on Friday that the government was acting legally after a case was brought by animal rights activists.

More than 80 brands have said they are "dismayed" by the government's new position.

Looks like fluorescent tubes will be phased out from end of August this year, suitable direct replacements are plug-and-play LED tubes. A quick check suggests they are twice as expensive, or more, but are claimed to last at least twice as long and are more energy efficient.

As fluorescent tubes contain small amounts of mercury they shouldn't be disposed of along with domestic rubbish but taken to a local authority waste disposal site.
