Kef fire risk 06/05/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9066 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1406 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1030 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8767 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Coronation service changed after backlash over pledge of allegiance to King
Subtle change made after critics likened new homage to ‘something out of 1984’

The Coronation service has been changed following a backlash over the decision to ask members of the public to pledge allegiance to the King.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will make clear during the ceremony on Saturday that those who wish to pay homage to the monarch are invited to do so.

A new form of words was added in recent days to better reflect the fact that it is simply an offer to participate, rather than an expectation, The Telegraph understands.

Court memo: Law does not recognize ‘private’ beaches

The Supreme Court has sent a memo to Greece’s prosecutors sounding the alarm over the “plight” of the country’s shorelines and urging them to crack down, to the fullest extent of the law, on violations where the public character of beaches is being threatened.

“The law does not recognize ‘private’ beaches!” the Supreme Court memo stressed, adding that any attempt to block public access – which is protected by the Greek Constitution – is not only illegal but “immoral” and should be dealt with strictly, with demolition orders and arrests where this becomes necessary.

Th coronation of King Charles III seems to have impressed some in Greece with one personality, fashion designer Vassilis Zoulias, calling for a restoration of the Greek monarchy, albeit in a ceremonial role which, he believes, would be good for tourism and international relations. Some support for the idea on social media, along with quite a lot of opposition.

The Greek monarchy was created when Otto, second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, was installed on the throne by the Great Powers (Britain, France and Russia) in 1833 following Greece gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Deposed in 1862, he was succeeded by George I of Greece until he was assassinated in 1913. His son, Constantine I, reigned until he abdicated in favour of his second son, Alexander, in 1917. Alexander's reign was equally short. In 1920 he was walking his dogs in the royal menagerie when they attacked a captive monkey. Attempting to rescue the monkey he was bitten bit and died of sepsis.

Constantine I was controversially returned as king but failed to provide military victory against Turkey and abdicated once again in 1922. He was succeeded by his first son, George II in 1923. Due to losses in the Greco-Turkish wars George II was deposed, stripped of Greek nationality and exiled when Greece was declared a republic in 1924. A referendum in 1935 restored the monarchy. In 1941 he was forced to flee from Greece to England following the Nazi invasion. After the war a rigged referendum returned George II to the throne in 1946. He died childless in 1947 and was succeeded by Pavlos, the third son of King Constantine I of Greece. His reign was comparatively uneventful until his death in 1964.

Constantine II, son of King Pavlos, reigned from 1964 until 1973. An unsuccessful counter coup against the military junta forced him into exile in 1967 and in 1973 the junta abolished the monarchy. A referendum run and rigged by the junta supported abolition. A second referendum, held after the restoration of democracy in 1974, confirmed abolition. Although he accepted this decision he did not renounce his title. He died in January, 2023, in London. His eldest male child, Pavlos, would presumably be crowned king if the monarchy were to be restored.
