Kef fire risk 10/05/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8960 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1288 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1161 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8859 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

An unpleasant event in Argostoli last night involving what appears to be a gang of youths. Apparently two males on a motorscooter chased a youth on foot up the pedestrian street outside the tax office and started to beat him up in front of shoppers, including children. Shop keepers initially chased them away but they returned with a gang and searched out their victim in a cafe. The proprietor calmed them down before they did any serious damage and they dispersed before the police arrived. The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Greek annual inflation rate slowed to 3.0% in April

Greek annual inflation rate slowed spectacularly to 3.0% in April, from 4.6% in March and 10.2% in April last year, reflecting almost exclusively a rapid fall in energy prices, while prices in food and food items grew 11.4% in the month, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Wednesday.

Baby died after being thrown from flat window by new mother

A woman who threw her newborn baby out of a window has admitted killing the infant.

Sarah Jayne Barron admitted infanticide during a brief hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday 9 May.

Under UK law, the definition of infanticide is when a woman causes the death of their child, who is under 12 months, while their mental state is affected by not having fully recovered from childbirth or by lactation.

The newborn's body was discovered in a private garden in Weston-super-Mare on 12 December 2020 - eight days after the offence was committed.

Uh-oh, heard there's already been a parking problem in Skala due to a tourist being confused by the way the road is marked out for no parking zones.

Study refutes prior beliefs about ancient eruption

Researchers have utilized state-of-the-art geophysical and geological techniques to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Minoan eruption that ravaged the Aegean island of Santorini around 1600 BCE. The study recently published in Nature Communications refutes previous estimates that suggested the eruption involved an enormous 86 cubic kilometers of erupted magma, instead revealing a significantly smaller magnitude of 26-41 cubic kilometers.

“There should be no concern regarding the Santorini volcano,” said Paraskevi (Evi) Nomikou, a marine geologist from the University of Athens who participated in the study. “According to our analysis, similar events, like the one that occurred 3,600 years ago, can repeat every 20,000-30,000 years.”
