Kef fire risk 17/05/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8955 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1207 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1167 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8923 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Found (not by me) on Facebook, author unknown:

My Last Day

No more lonely cold nights or hearing that I'm bad
No more growling belly from the meals I never had
No more scorching sunshine with a water bowl that's dry
No more complaining neighbours about the noise when I cry

No more hearing "shut up", "get down" or "get out of here"
No more feeling disliked, only peace is in the air
Euthanasia is a blessing, though some still can't see
Why I was ever born if I weren't meant to be

My last day of living was the best I ever had
Someone held me very close; I could see she was very sad
I kissed the lady's face, and she hugged me as she cried
I wagged my tail to thank her, and then I closed my eyes and died……

Pregnant British woman stuck in Rhodes hosptal and 'fearing for baby'

A pregnant British woman is stuck in a hospital in Rhodes and says she is fearing for the safety of her unborn baby. Thurza Blagg, from Nottingham, was rushed to hospital when she began bleeding whilst on holiday on the Greek island.

The 32-year-old, who is 28 weeks pregnant, is desperate to return home where she feels she can give birth safely. However, Ms Blagg says her insurance company AXA missed a chance to repatriate her, resulting instead in an urgent transfer to Alexandra hospital in Athens.

"It's not like the UK here, it's hard to understand what my condition is. There is a massive language barrier, when they're saying medical terms and I'm carrying my first full term pregnancy, it's hard to understand what's going on.

"I don't feel very safe, I don't feel like I've got a clear birth plan. They're changing my sheets today for the first time, I haven't been offered any food or water, my mum has to buy it all."

Her mum, Kim, who has remained by her side throughout, said: "It's been disgusting, shocking and frightening. It's been an awful ordeal and because of there being limited visiting hours I've had to fight to stay in the room with her. We've had no support whatsoever, the insurance company has been terrible."

I'm sure Greek women give birth too, even if they don't speak English, so hopefully she'll be OK.

Summer Car Hire Prices Soar in Popular Destinations including Cyprus and Greece, Warns Consumer Group

The study analyzed the prices of a week's car hire in August in countries such as Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, the UK, and the USA. The analysis showed that prices are on average 77% higher than they were in 2019 due to a high demand for car rentals and depleted stocks. The USA was found to be the most expensive country, with an average price of £546, representing a 92% rise since 2019.

While the UK, Cyprus, and Italy have all seen prices double over the same period, car hire is overall marginally cheaper than in 2022. However, it should be noted that rental companies with the cheapest headline prices may have hidden charges.

No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector

Landlords would be banned from evicting tenants with no justification as part of a long-promised overhaul of the private rental sector in England.

A new law to be tabled in Parliament would abolish no-fault evictions and end bans on tenants claiming benefits.

The bill would also make it easier for landlords to repossess properties from anti-social tenants.

Under the new law, tenants would be given the legal right to request to keep a pet in their home, which the landlord cannot unreasonably refuse.

Only two of 40 'new' NHS hospitals promised built and seven started
Boris Johnson promised new facilities finished by 2030 - and government is still pledged to the scheme

A BBC investigation has found that 33 of 40 supposed new hospitals originally promised by Boris Johnson’s government have yet to start work. The investigation looked at the announcement from the Tories which the government is still pledged to carry out.

The National Audit Office has already said it has started a value for money review of the New Hospitals Programme and report its findings this year. However, the BBC has found that only seven have started, with a deadline of 2030 for the scheme.

Indeed, only two are finished and open and of the six pledged to be completed by 2025 none has full planning permission or funding yet.

Something might've got lost in translation but I gather a female member of the Roma community, said to be from Kefalonia, was yesterday found guilty in the Jury Court of Justice on Kefalonia of neglect of a puppy in Patras. Apparently the dog was kept on a short chain with only a rusty barrel for shelter, little food and no water. It died of heat stroke. The woman was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 5,000€, suspended until appeal heard. Brief video on zoosos.gr

Animal testing licences for makeup banned

The government has banned the issuing of licences for animal testing of chemicals used as ingredients in cosmetics products.

The government had allowed animal testing for makeup ingredients to resume despite a 25-year ban.

A recent court ruling said the government changed a policy on animal testing to align with EU chemical rules.

But Home Secretary Suella Braverman said no new licences will be granted.

Huge bear stuck in a tree for hours drops to the ground after falling asleep

A 158kg bear was stuck in a tree for hours, before it fell asleep and dropped onto mattresses below.

Wildlife experts were called out to the bear stuck in a tree on the residential street.

They fired at least four tranquilizer darts into his backside.

The bear snoozed on a thick branch before finally dropping to the ground by early afternoon on Sunday.

Neighbour Ashlea Walter hauled mattresses from her house to soften the fall, newspaper the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported.

Martin Lewis has issued a 48-hour warning to pensioners who could miss out on a £301 payment from the government.
