Kef fire risk 05/09/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8907 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0293 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1227 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9715 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greece in a new deal to bring back 161 ancient treasures from US

Greece has struck a deal for the eventual return from a US billionaire’s private collection of 161 ancient Greek artifacts dating from more than 4,500 years ago.

Greek Government spokesman Yannis Oikonomou said last Tuesday that Greece’s Parliament will vote on draft legislation to ratify the agreement, which involves New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, (MET), a top Greek museum, and a Delaware-based cultural institute.

Oikonomou said the agreement, which avoids any legal dispute or payment by the Greek government, could serve as a model for further restitutions. It’s expected to be tabled in Parliament early next week.

The main opposition socialist party SYRIZA is against the deal saying that it legitimates theft of Greece’s cultural heritage.

Greece Braces for ‘Worst Winter Since 1942’ Due to Energy Crisis

Due to the energy crisis, Greece is bracing for the most difficult winter since 1942, the darkest year of the German occupation, a minister warned on Saturday.

Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis advised Greeks to seek alternative ways for their energy needs and warned of the difficult months to come due to “the enormous damage that our economy and our pockets will suffer from Putin’s energy war in Europe.”

The World Bank has warned that the war in Ukraine will not only drive up energy prices but also food costs for the next three years, resembling the crises of the 1970s.

British Airline Passenger Faces Charges in Greece

A British man has been charged in Greece with several offenses after his flight from London to Cyprus was diverted, authorities said.

One of the charges, a felony, is endangering transportation and passenger and crew safety. The charges were pressed after the 22-year-old man faced a prosecutor Saturday.

The easyJet flight to Paphos, Cyprus, was diverted to Thessaloniki late Friday after the passenger had apparently exhibited unruly behavior and fought with fellow passengers and the crew. The charge sheet says several empty bottles of alcoholic drinks were found on his seat.

The man is being held pending a Monday appearance before an examining magistrate, where he will answer the charges or be given a few days to do so, with the detention extended until then.

Covid app that detects virus in your voice ‘more accurate than lateral flow tests’
Technology could be used to quickly screen people before mass events or in poor countiries that can't afford PCR tests

An app that can detect coronavirus in your voice has been developed in a major scientific breakthrough.

The AI-powered technology is easier to use and more accurate than a lateral flow test, scientists say.

The mobile app takes less than a minute to flag positive cases and gives an accurate result 89 per cent of the time and negative cases 83 per cent of the time.

In contrast, the accuracy of lateral flow tests varies widely depending on the brand and the nose and throat swabs are less good at picking up infectious people without symptoms.

The new app could be used to very quickly screen people for the bug before they attend mass events such as concerts and big sports matches.

Scientists discover humans produce an invisible aura of air-cleansing molecules

Humans have an invisible aura around our bodies which could be cleaning the air we breathe, scientists have found.

A study has shown, for the first time, that an invisible haze of air-cleansing molecules is produced on human bodies when ozone in the air reacts with oil made by our skin.

However, experts do not know if the field is a force for good or bad because the impact of the aura remains unknown.
