Kef fire risk 08/09/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8911 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0182 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1222 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9821 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

‘The real life of Athens is here’ – hidden gems beyond and beneath the Acropolis

The Acropolis Museum’s underground lab, the ancient Hadrian aqueduct and an arts festival in an old factory offer a more personal view of the Greek capital

It’s the most exclusive lost property office in the world. Deep underground, in a thrumming, humidified laboratory, a world-historical statue is being reunited with its ancient marble foot. Of all the rooms at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, this is the most pulse-quickening, which is saying something considering that the building houses treasures of antiquity including friezes from the Parthenon.

Greece wiretap and spyware claims circle around PM Mitsotakis

It has been dubbed the Greek Watergate. What began as a surveillance of a little-known journalist in Greece has evolved into an array of revelations circling around the Greek government.

The story emerged last spring, when Thanasis Koukakis found out his phone had been infected with spyware that can extract data from a device. He also discovered he had been tracked by Greece's EYP National Intelligence Service via more traditional phone-tapping.

It then emerged that an MEP had also had his phone tapped before he became leader of Greece's third-biggest party.

Avira have an offer on the Pro version of the anti-virus program, only £0.95 for first year, can be cancelled thereafter. Price-wise not much more expensive than the free version but offers that bit more: avira.com

Concern expressed by seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos that a significant earthquake could cause a catastrophe on Zakynthos' Navagio beach and even without a wobble rockfalls could reoccur.

Rockfall just off Navagio beach following today's 5.3 wobble has led to the beach being closed to landing parties.

Pine marten spotted in London for first time in more than a century

A pine marten has been spotted in London for the first time in more than a century after being pictured on a camera trap installed to monitor hedgehogs.

The endangered mustelid was driven to extinction in England a hundred years ago and was only sighted again for the first time in the Shropshire hills in 2015, remaining an extremely rare animal.

This particular pine marten was caught on camera in a woodland in south-west London where cameras were installed by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) as part of the London HogWatch project to monitor and conserve the capital’s hedgehog population.

EU wants to enforce 5 years of security and 3 years of OS updates for all phones

EU lawmakers have proposed sweeping requirements for smartphones sold in the region. The regulators have suggested that phone vendors provide at least five years of security updates and three years of OS updates to their devices. Moreover, the said security and operating system updates should reach users “at the latest two months after the public release.”

If enforced, these rules could fundamentally shift the way Android OEMs handle software support for their devices. Samsung and Google are the only brands that promise five years of security updates to their phones. Even so, not all of their devices enjoy these benefits. Samsung also issues four major Android updates to its premium devices, the longest in the Androidsphere. In comparison, Google and other brands provide three or fewer major OS updates for select devices.
https://www.androidauthority.com/eu-smartphone-updates-rules-3205112/

I think a lot of smartphone users aren't aware - or don't care - that their 'phone is potentially insecure six months after purchase.

Horse dies after being abandoned without water, food

A horse in Corfu has died after it was left by its owner in the blazing sun without any water or food, state-run broadcaster ERT reported on Thursday.

The horse was found by local residents who were concerned with its emaciated state. Animal rights activists and other residents freed the animal and tried to shield it from the sun but it eventually died.

Witnesses said that a veterinarian had been called the previous days to check on the horse because it was sick and that a local man allegedly admitted to being its owner.

Delivery man caught on doorbell camera pelting cat with stones

The disturbing clip shows how the courier first attempted to swat the cat, named Tumble, with a large letter he had been delivering while shouting at the terrified pet.

But seconds later, he took another swipe at the cat before picking up a large stone from the front garden and hurling it at the pet prompting it to flee the scene.

Brief video in link. The cat may well have been terrified but I doubt the Independent can verify that.
