Amazon is to develop its own computer games, pitting the retail giant head to head against the likes of Nintendo and Electronic Arts.

The Seattle business, which is expected to launch its first games console this year, has already dipped a toe into the project, with a game called Air Patriots and the acquisition of a Californian gaming company, Double Helix.

It is now on a hiring spree to recruit industry heavyweights in Seattle and Silicon Valley, as part of plans to turn its fledgling Amazon Games Studios into a major operation.

It is understood that Amazon will use the original content as “bait”, to encourage customers to buy its new console, and then purchase all their games through the device, from Amazon. The company has already had considerable success with the same strategy in other sectors, where it has used a virtuous circle to exert an iron grip on that sector.

The most obvious example is in ebooks, where the company launched its Kindle ereader ahead of competitors, linked the ground-breaking device directly to the Amazon store, and then started its own book publishing division to seed it with original content.

More recently, the retailer has started to produce its own television programmes, much like Netflix has, in order to hook consumers into its online rental business. By doing so, Amazon not only bolsters its revenues, but it also ensures that the company captures as much data as possible about users’ habits.

David Cameron resorts to paying for Facebook fans because not enough people like him

Facebook wouldn't reveal any specifics on the deal, but a marketing expert told the paper that the social media campaign would have set the party back around £7500.

Talking about Amazon, a timely article on GreekReporter:

Quote
Thirty-six percent of Greeks in an effort to not only to save money, but also to purchase products they can’t find on the shelves in Greece, use the Internet to make their purchases. However, according to the results of a recent survey, when Greek buyers choose Greek e-shops to purchase a product they want, they wind up paying more money than when they choose foreign e-shops.

The survey was conducted by PayPal, the results of which were presented by the Greek newspaper “To Ethnos.” According to PayPal’s data, someone can find products with lower prices in the U.S. e-shops than in Greek e-shops.

The survey’s data shows that Greeks seem to be e-shopping mainly from:
-Russia
-China
-Germany
-Great Britain

I found e-shop.gr was good for e.g. computer stuff, pretty good selection at prices not too much more than Amazon. I've looked at the Amazon sites for Germany and Italy and they weren't any less expensive than Amazon UK (for what I wanted, anyway). I'm wary of buying from Chinese or Russian sites, too many fakes, IMO.

As Bryan's mentioned previously, import tax might be slapped on any items bought from outside the EU. Possible the article doesn't take that into account as that cost possibly wouldn't be processed via Paypal.

Trojan Promises Naked Videos of Facebook Friends

More than 2,000 people have been tricked into installing a Trojan after clicking on a new Facebook scam that promises naked videos of their friends.

:bleh: Almost makes me think some people deserve a nasty infection (...but they'd probably share it).

Talk that Kefalonia and four other islands will return to being multi-municipalities. One day it's a given fact, the next it's denied completely. We'll see.

The local branch of SYRIZA has recently selected their mayoral candidate from four names, at least two of whom, Kostas Zapantis (former Mayor of Elios-Pronnoi) and George Tsilimidos (former Mayor of Argostoli), have since stated they didn't enter themselves for consideration. One might wonder... if they'd been selected... ? For anyone who's interested, the SYRIZA candidate is Makis Dimitratos.
