Glacier melt is causing Earth’s crust to warp slightly, say scientists

Loggerhead rescued on Myrtos beach yesterday after it clambered out of the sea. Appears to have suffered a head wound. Initially to be treated on Kef but likely to be transferred to specialist care centre outside Athens.

This phenomenon is seen in Scotland and Scandinavia, where the weight of the ice at the depth of the last (and, as yet, unfinished) Ice Age between 30,000 and 8,000 years ago (in places the ice was as much as 2km thick) depressed the Earth's crust.  Both areas are still "bouncing back" now that the enormous weight of the ice has gone.  In NE Scotland, the land is rising by about 10cm a century (and SE Britain is, as a result, sinking by about 5cm a century - with the obvious concomitant flooding problems).  In Sweden, the so-called 'land uplift' is even more rapid - areas in the north of the country, by Baltic Bay, see an annual rise in the land of about 1cm and you can visit a "beach" which is a couple of hundred metres above sea level - complete with rounded pebbles...!
