Kef fire risk 13/09/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8938 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0460 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1188 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9560 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

That's the Henk, a Sun Odyssey 54DS 16 metre (52.5') sailing yacht built in 2003 and hired out from Levkas marina for a mere 2750€ per week plus 300€ obligatory end of hire clean, 3000€ deposit. Extras include skipper, cook, wi-fi, paddle boat.

Now resting on seabed outside Fiskardo harbour after being towed out for safety of other boats. Coast guard installed a floating anti-pollution barrier around the yacht as well as flashing lights for navigational safety reasons. When the boat went down marine pollution was observed but contained within the floating barrier and dealt with using decontamination materials. Fiskardo port authority investigating, likely to impose admin sanctions. No word as to whether the hirers will get their deposit returned...

Minor drama in Vathy yesterday when the Freya lost an anchor in the port. Coast Guard assisted with mooring, no injuries reported to ten foreign occupants and no pollution observed. Confined to port temporarily.

E-scooters face ban after 80-year-old seriously injured by rider

E-scooters are to be banned on the streets of Canterbury after an 80-year-old woman was hit by a rider and suffered significant injuries.

The decision follows a pilot scheme launched in Nov 2020, where residents of the Kent city could hire motorised scooters.

Its trial period was due to conclude in Nov 2022 but now Canterbury has now become the third local council in the country to outlaw the vehicles over safety concerns, after Staffordshire and Rochdale concluded their own trials in October 2021 and March 2022, respectively.

The scheme will be terminated by Dec 1, with no scooters thereafter allowed on the city's road, after a proposal from the Department for Transport to extend the trial until 2024 was rejected by Kent County Council.

Private e-scooters remain illegal to use on public roads nationwide.

Other pilot e-scooter rental schemes run around the country will end in May 2024 and data from these will determine whether the Government decides to approve the use of e-scooters on public highways in the UK.

Average UK food bill rises by £571 a year as grocery inflation hits record
Aldi overtakes Morrisons to become UK’s fourth largest supermarket amid cost of living crisis

The market research firm Kantar said the typical annual grocery bill has risen to £5,181 from £4,610. Milk, butter and dog food are among the items affected by the biggest increases, going up in price by 31%, 25% and 29% respectively in the four weeks to 4 September compared with a year earlier.

Sales of the very cheapest value own-label products were up by a third compared with a year ago, as customers try to cope with surging living costs. Overall spending on all retailer own-label lines was £393m higher during the four-week period, pushing own-label’s share of the market to 51.1%.

An analysis from the thinktank the Resolution Foundation found that Liz Truss’s plans for an energy price freeze and sweeping tax cuts will give Britain’s richest households twice as much financial support with living costs as the poorest households.

Based on pre-tax profits of fiscal year 2022 that are more than 20% higher than the average of the three years starting in 2019. It’s exceptional and temporary and up to member states to apply.
