Russian owned ship in Katelios
« on: Monday, 20 July, 2015 @ 22:09:38 »
The Russian owned and Maltese flagged U-Boat Navigator is currently moored in Katelios Bay. According to reports the ship is equipped with a submersible and it is planned to film on the wreck of HMS Persius, which lies about three kilometres off Katelios at a depth of 50 metres.

Mmm, I wonder if there's finally going to be a film about John Capes and his escape from that sub and his time on the Island? Apparently there are at least 3 Screenplays available.

There have been suggestions about a film and Tom Cruise was actually seen in the area, but so far nothing. I am not sure that they would bother to bring a ship in to take some underwater shots, when this can be done anywhere. The hull would have to look like it had just sunk and not 74 years ago. Or perhaps they would want to give some authenticity to the story by showing the wreck in the opening sequence?
BTW this is still a sea grave with remains of sailors still aboard.

The wreck is dereriorating. The Dives Centres in Agia Efemia and Lassi regularly go there. To it, not in it, because it is as Roger says, a War Grave.
As of last September there had been a lot of recent damage from fishing nets to part of the Conning Tower and the Gun. I got this from Makis and Auba of Aquatic when I spotted them at Cosy in Katelios relaxing after a dive. It's not a dive I've done, even though I'm qualified enough for it.

I've heard from a friend, who is a camera-man in Pinewoods studios,

that Nickolus Cage and Penelope Cruz have set up a film crew to be on the island starting next spring to make a film on this.

It's going to be called;-  "...Captain Corelli's Submarine ...!  :yahoo:

Just my two lepta worth: tend to agree with Rog, a motion picture probably wouldn't need film of the actual Perseus... unless it's just brief footage of the remains as it is now. There's a bit about the u-boat on the u-group website:

U-Boat Malta is a company specialising in marine archaeology and scientific and historical research. U-Boat’s expeditions lead across the globe, exploring various aspects of the underwater world and marine life.

The marine support vessel U-Boat Navigator is equipped for complex and lengthy expeditions and research missions to shipwrecks such as HMHS ‘Britannic’, HMY ‘Aegusa’, HMS ‘Olympus’, HMS ‘Perseus’, and U-133. In 2015, U-Boat Navigator is planning to carry out further expeditions to ORP ‘Kujawiak’, SS ‘Burdigala’, as well as HMHS ‘Britannic’, HMS ‘Perseus’, and U-133. Equipped with multiple submarines, U-Boat Navigator can ensure an underwater experience like no other with a unique filming reels.

A recent brief quote from Kostas Thoctarides, who discovered the remains of the Perseus in (or around) 1997:

I like submarines very much, especially British, because they are big, like “Perseus”.

It was after this dive in 1997 that a film was made of the discovery. Jimmy Mikalato drove the boat and the film they made used to be shown nightly in their taverna. It was also shown on various programs on uk tv .The rumour about a film being made has been going the rounds for years, at one time Tom Hanks was the favourite to star, even visiting in a helicopter. It would make a very interesting film. There is a very good web site to read all the story .I also seem to remember a piece on the news some years ago when they interviewed the people who were quite old then, who had rescued Capes ,sheltered him and helped him escape on the boat sent to collect him. It maybe was some sort of anniversary?

Great little film. Must ask a mate of mine from Poros who's surname is Vandoros if he is any relation to one of the locals who helped John Capes.

I have a copy of the BBC Radio 4 programme. I must get round to listening to it again.
Incidentally, the ship is now over the wreck site.

Yes, many thanks for the film and info on HMS Perseus;for many years the Capes story has fascinated me and that cleared up a lot of the mystery. I  will ask my uncle, who virtually designed the escape gear for British submarines during the post-war years, if he knows any more and will come back on this.

Some fantastic underwear sequences there but a quick question. The wreck I presume is an official war grave ? And if so are divers allowed inside the sub ? It's very interesting but also makes me feel a little uneasy.

Hi Bluenose
It is a War grave. Divers are definitely not allowed inside, and the Dive Centres in Agia Efemia and Lassi rigidly enforce this. It's possible to look in through the open hatches, but that's it. Mind you with lots of divers having camera these day and some of them on extension poles it could only be a matter of time before someone attempts to get a few sneak photos from inside.

Cheers U4ea . Watched one film with the divers inside the boat then actually opening an inner hatch to peer into the next compartment ! Ta for the info,it's still such an incredible story. If Hollywood do get hold of it lets hope they do it justice.

The interior shots in the film in APB's link could be from the 1997 survey before it was declared a War Grave, or else the 2013 survey was given a dispensation. Makis from Aquatic was part of the 2013 Survey, as shown in the credits, and I remember him telling me he'd been involved in it.
