Major wildfire raging on the island of Zakynthos

A strong fire-fighting force was deployed in the mountains near Agios Georgios and the area near the 'Navagio' beach on the island of Zakynthos on Wednesday, to combat a major wildfire that broke out in the region.

The fire fighters on the ground were also reinforced by two PZL aircraft from nearby Cephallonia

Mount Vesuvius fire: Local residents evacuated as toxic smoke threatens Naples
Police say they believe the fires are the result of human activity but have not confirmed whether they were deliberately started

Mount Vesuvius is on fire and local residents have been evacuated as firefighters attempt to tackle multiple blazes.

Huge clouds of smoke blew over nearby Naples and surrounding areas, prompting fears that the volcano was erupting.

However, it has since been confirmed that the cause is a series of surface fires that have devastated acres of woodland in the area.

Man trapped in Texas cash machine sends 'help me' notes

A Texas man who found himself trapped inside a cash machine slipped "help me" notes through the receipt slot.

The man, who police say was working on a renovation of the bank, left his phone in his vehicle before getting stuck in the drive-thru ATM's vault.

The unnamed workman was freed after shouting to ATM users, who continued withdrawing cash throughout his ordeal on Wednesday in Corpus Christi.

Police thought it a hoax before kicking in a door to withdraw him.

Pensioners now spend whole retirement battling 'toxic cocktail' of ill-health

Most pensioners now spend their entire retirement in ill health, battling a “toxic cocktail” of ailments such as dementia and joint pain, according to a new Government report.

Analysis by Public Health England found that, for many, the average healthy life expectancy - the number of years a person can expect to live largely free of illness - is less than age at which they qualify for a state pension.

Overall life expectancy for both men and women has continued to increase - now standing at 79.5 and 83.1 respectively - however medical advances to reduce non-lethal and chronic illnesses have not improved at the same pace.

While men can expect to drift into general ill health at 63, they have to wait until they are 65 for their state pension.

Women’s healthy life expectancy is currently at 64, and they qualify for a pension at 63 years and nine months.

However, from 2019...

Swimming trunk: elephant rescued from ocean 10 miles off Sri Lanka coast

An elephant has been rescued from the ocean about 10 miles (16km) off Sri Lanka’s north-east coast, the country’s navy has said.

Navy personnel said the pachyderm was caught in a current off the coast near the town of Kokkilai and dragged into the ocean, where it was spotted by a patrol boat.

Department of Wildlife officials and another navy vessel were despatched to the area and helped drag the animal back to shore in a 12-hour rescue.

Divers aided by wildlife officials approached the distressed elephant and tied ropes to it, before towing it gently to shallow waters near the coast, where it was released.
