Kef fire risk 26/06/22: Medium

Twenty nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, two on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8839 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0808 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1313 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9252 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Some rumours around that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will call a general election to be held in late September / start of October. ND look to have a good lead over Alexis Tsipras led Syriza.

Unconfirmed: foreign female swimmer rescued unconscious from the sea at Myrtos, resuscitated by life guard.

Edit: appears factual

Chimpanzee Escaped from Athens Zoo, Shot Dead

A male chimpanzee was shot dead after escaping from its enclosure at the Attica Zoological Park, which is located just outside of Athens, on Saturday.

The killing of the animal, as well as the details surrounding its escape from the zoo, which is located in the Athens suburb of Spata, have come under scrutiny since the chimpanzee’s death.

According to the zoo, the chimpanzee, which was 27 years old and stood at 1.80 m (5’10) before its death, was able to escape its cage, get over an electric fence, and then make its way to the zoo’s parking lot.

No 10 willing to break international law to protect British steel, Boris Johnson suggests

Boris Johnson has suggested he is willing to break international law to protect the British steel industry after his ethics adviser resigned over the issue and said it would amount to a “deliberate” breach of the ministerial code.

David Lammy, the shadow foreign secretary, said Labour would support the continuation of tariffs.

“We would support him, steel workers support him, the unions support him, industry supports him. Labour does support him,” he said.

Yes, very good to keep the steel industry going, workers in jobs, etc, but if he keeps breaking international agreements no-one will trust him. Or the UK.

Union accuses Labour of ‘direct attack’ on airline staff by not backing 10% rise

David Lammy sparked a fresh row with a key trade union on Sunday by saying Labour should categorically refuse to back demands from airline workers for a pay rise of about 10%.

Unite accused the shadow foreign secretary of launching a “direct attack” on the workers it represents, with the general secretary, Sharon Graham, saying his comments were a “new low” for Labour, which could not be relied upon by working people.

Lammy was asked if he supported the BA check-in staff at Heathrow who have voted go to on strike over management’s refusal to reverse the 10% pay cut imposed during the pandemic and who are represented by Unite.

“Many of us might want a rise of 10%,” Lammy said. “In truth, most people understand it’s unlikely that you’re going to get that.”

Asked directly if he supported the check-in staff, who are members of Unite, Lammy replied: “No, I don’t. It’s a no. It’s a categorical no.”

Graham said that the workers were not asking for a 10% pay rise, but the restoration of money taken from them when pay was cut during the pandemic.

LOL, in-fighting ahead between those in Labour who fear supporting the strikes will piss off the public and traditionalists who support the unions whatever. Like it says, in this case the strike is not about a pay rise but restoration of a 10% coronavirus pay cut.

I wonder if Lammy and Labour support Heathrow's chief executive getting an annual salary increase of 85% to £1.5 million last year? (BBC)
