Kef fire risk 14/09/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8940 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0480 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1186 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9542 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Bank holiday: Hospital and GP appointments in England to be postponed for day of Queen's funeral

Thousands of hospital and GP appointments scheduled for the day of the Queen's funeral are being postponed in England.

Some NHS trusts have confirmed that "non-urgent" procedures, operations and appointments at their hospitals will be re-scheduled, while some GP surgeries have confirmed they will close.

Other hospitals and GPs say they will be operating as usual on the Monday, 19 September bank holiday.

A bit more drama on Ithaka yesterday when the Creature. a French flagged sail boat, reported a mechanical failure off Atokos island. Local coast guard vessel located the boat and towed it into Vathy where it awaits repair and re-certification of seaworthiness. No injury to either of the two occupants and no marine pollution observed.

According to Fraport there were 2897 fewer arrivals at Kef airport in August than in July. Possibly more arrivals by ferry, haven't seen any figures for that.

Irini Pappa has passed away aged 96. Since 2013 she had suffered with Alzheimer's disease. Over a long career she played in many films including The Guns of Navarone (1961); Zorba the Greek (1964); Z (1969), a thinly-fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of the democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963; Anne of the Thousand Days (1969); The Assisi Underground (1985); The Odyssey (1997), an American TV mini-series; Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001).

First organised tour party from Estonia arrived on Kef yesterday when 150 passengers flew in from Tallin. Apparently Estonians like to take holidays early and late season (April & May / September & October) due to the heat so it'll be a short season for the tour agency as most hotels will close early in October. Hence so will most tavernas. Still, it's a start.

Expert panel recommends new Covid jabs for over-60s, health professionals

Greece’s National Vaccination Committee on Tuesday said it recommends the updated Covid-19 vaccines for people over 60 years of age and health professionals, among others.

These vaccines, which have already been received by Greece (Pfizer & Moderna) and which will begin to be administered on Wednesday, protect against both earlier strains of the coronavirus and also from the virus’ most recent mutations (ΒΑ.1, ΒΑ.4 and ΒΑ.5).

It clarified that these vaccines should only be used by people who have already completed their vaccination with the original vaccines, and three months have elapsed since they were inoculated with at least two doses.

Man survives four days in Florida swamp after alligator bites off his arm
Staggering, naked and bleeding heavily, Eric Merda lived on flowers and marsh water during agonising journey to safety

A man whose arm was ripped off by an alligator survived for four days in the Florida swampland by eating flowers and staggering naked towards civilisation.

Eric Merda, 43, had been at work shutting down a sprinkler system and decided to go for a walk in the woods at the end of the day, leaving his phone in his pickup truck.

As the sun set, he became disoriented in the thick brush, but thought that, despite the threat of alligators, a quick 15-minute swim across Lake Manatee would serve as a shortcut back to his truck.

Google fails to overturn €4bn fine over Android bundling

Google has failed to overturn a fine of more than €4bn (£3.5bn), imposed by the EU, for using its Android mobile operating system to thwart rivals.

Europe’s second-highest court largely upheld the ruling on Wednesday, but reduced the fine from €4.34bn to €4.125bn. The EU’s competition commission has now imposed a total of €8.25bn in antitrust fines on the search engine, in three investigations stretching back more than a decade.

Sounds as though there may be a new faction contesting local elections in Argostoli municipality: Faros. Some nice sounding ideals for Argostoli, no mention (so far) of far flung outposts of the empire such as Poros, Katelios, etc.

Northern Ireland schoolboy becomes UK’s youngest senior footballer at 13

The Northern Irish schoolboy Christopher Atherton became the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom on Tuesday night aged 13. The schoolboy broke a record that had stood for 42 years when, aged 13 years and 329 days, he went on as a second-half substitute for Glenavon.

Amazingly, Atherton’s first touch was an assist when he set up his side’s sixth goal.

What is it about boats catching fire? Latest news, there's one alight a way off Katelios beach. Last I heard, coast guard were going to attend / rescue occupants.

Update: two occupants safely evacuated via dinghy.
