Kef fire risk 29/05/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8942 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1074 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1183 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9030 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Late yesterday afternoon a car on the Poros-Argostoli road caught fire in Perata, no injuries but car probably written off. Last night three cars were involved in an accident in Argostol, one person injured. Not clear if all three were being driven or if any parked.

Sami police earlier today arrested a male and a female for fraud after a local realised he'd been conned out of his money for two 'bargain priced' motorcycles. Money recovered and couple to be additionally prosecuted on warrants issued by courts in Irakleion and Athens for similar frauds.

British national killed by lightning while swimming on Rhodes

A 26-year-old British tourist died after he was struck by lightning while swimming during a thunderstorm in Aghia Agathi, eastern Rhodes on Monday.

The tourist was on holiday and decided to stay in the water even after it started raining heavily, ignoring the exhortations of other swimmers to get out. The tragic incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday. Ambulance crews who rushed to the scene fought to keep him alive. The man was rushed to the Health Centre of Archangelos where the medical staff continued efforts to resuscitate him but, unfortunately, it was too late.

School teacher leading a surging religious party

An elementary school teacher with a theology degree is behind the Niki (Victory) party, which just missed out on the 3% threshold for entering Parliament on the May 21 election day.

Niki is obviously a Christian party; its campaign meeting began and ended with prayers. Its message is also tinged with nationalistic, homophobic and conspiracy theory themes. Some within the Church disapprove.

“Vote-getting cynicism and the weaponization of religious sentiment… are enormous threats to the political system and society,” said Metropolitan of Alexandroupoli, Anthimos.

More details on the British tourist who died in the sea off Rodes:

A 26-year-old British man has died after reportedly being struck by lightning while paddleboarding in Greece.

The  man, who has not been identified, was in the sea off the beach in Agia Agathi, Rhodes, as his girlfriend filmed him from the beach, according to local reports.

Greek newspaper Rodiaki reported that lightning struck the water near the man shortly before 1.30pm local time on Tuesday, causing him to fall in the water injured.

The newspaper reported that a passer-by, who it named as a Brazilian footballer who plays for a local side, waded into the water to pull the man back to shore. Medics then took him to a local hospital before he was declared dead.

Memory loss ‘can be reversed by simple diet changes’
A lack of flavonols - nutrients found in fruit, vegetables and even wine - stops the brain functioning at its best, researchers say

Memory loss can be reversed by increasing intake of foods such as green tea, apples and berries, new research suggests.

The study is the first to show that a diet with insufficient flavanols - nutrients found in certain fruits and vegetables - stops the brain functioning at its best, and drives memory loss.

Flavonols are present in many foods including green leafy vegetables, blackcurrants, onions, apples, berries, cherries, peaches, soybeans, citrus foods, tea, chocolate, lettuce, peppers, grapes and even wine.
