Greece: Adverse weather forecast across most of the country through at least May 3

Severe weather is forecast across much of Greece through at least May 3. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, lightning, and possible hail storms. Heavy downpours associated with the storms may trigger flooding in low-lying areas, and strong winds could cause property damage and power outages.

As of early May 2, authorities have issued the following weather warnings across the country:

*   Orange thunderstorm warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): Ionian Islands Region

*   Yellow thunderstorm, heavy rain, and strong wind warnings: the rest of Greece, except the North Aegean and far eastern South Aegean regions

Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.

Heatwave Cleon returning in full force after Wednesday

According to the latest forecast by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), temperatures will be lower and their intensity less severe for eastern parts of Greece for about three days, due to winds reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean.

Temperatures will start to climb again from Thursday, when the winds fall off, and reach a new peak affecting the entire country between Friday and Sunday, before the cooling winds start to blow once more next Monday.

The maximum temperatures this week will be as follows:

From Monday until Wednesday, temperatures will peak at 38-40C in western Greece and up to 41C in the northwest Peloponnese, but not exceed 35-38C in the north, possibly 39C in parts of Thrace, 37-39C in the east and 36-38C on the islands of the Aegean.

On Thursday, maximum temperatures will start to climb to between 40-42C and reach as high as 43C in some locations on the mainland, be at 39-41C on the Ionian islands and between 37-39C on the Aegean islands.

Between Friday and Sunday, the temperatures will climb even higher, with the maximum at 41-43C on the mainland, or even 44C in some locations.

Greece will start to get cooler again from next Monday, especially in the north, with temperatures dropping 2-3 degrees celsius.

Heatwave to return on Thursday

A second heatwave will hit Greece from Thursday until Sunday, pushing temperatures as high as 44 Celsius (111.2 Fahrenheit). But even when the heatwave (defined as temperatures at least equal to 39C) recedes, temperatures will remain high for the following several days, meteorologists warn.

Friday will be the high point of the heatwave, with 44C expected in the interior of the regions of Central Greece and Thessaly and even some islands seeing 40C.

Tourism sites including Acropolis to close during hottest parts of day as temperatures set to remain over 40C

Greece is set to endure its hottest July weekend in 50 years, a top meteorologist has warned, as the country wilts under a prolonged heatwave set to last well into next week.

Government ministries have advised people to work from home where possible and not to venture out unnecessarily. The exceptional temperatures also mean key tourism sites will be closed during the hottest part of the day.

Heatwave to continue next week, some respite as of Thursday

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) said in an updated emergency weather report on Sunday said that the heatwave will continue mostly unabated until Thursday, when it will post a moderate decline.

Sunday’s thermal surge prevailed throughout the country with temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius in Thessaly, central Greece.

On Monday, temperatures will decline between 2 to 5 degrees with the higher drop observed in the eastern parts of the country. Temperatures will range between 38 to 42 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday and Wednesday, scorching heat will push temperatures up to 42 and 44 degrees.

A moderate respite is expected as of Thursday, with temperatures expected to drop by 6 to 8 degrees in most parts of the country.

More heat, with a small break

Another heatwave is expected to push temperatures in many parts of Greece above the 40 degrees Celsius mark again this weekend, though forecasters are promising cooler weather at the start of next week.

The national weather service, EMY, said that temperatures will continue to inch up on Friday after a very warm Thursday, to reach 38-40 Celsius in Central Greece and the Eastern Aegean, with other parts just being just a couple of degrees below these levels.

A forecast for light clouds will likely make conditions feel worse by adding humidity to the atmosphere.

Saturday is going to be scorcher, though the first hints of rain will be seen in the Ionian and western mainland later in the day, with the wet weather spreading to other parts of the country on Sunday, mainly in the west and north.

EMY also warned of the possibility of storms on Sunday.

So far looking at around 30° C on Kef, forecast could change.

The regions of Thessalia, Sporades, central and eastern Sterea Ellada, north Evia, and the Peloponnese will be most affected by rain.

Storms forecast over weekend

Civil Protection authorities are on heightened alert in response to forecasts of severe weather on Saturday as the high temperatures give way to rain and storms.

“The situation is alarming. In Western Greece there will be heavy showers and storms. As time passes, the system will move further east and affect Attica as well. We will have a line of storms,” said meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos in comments to Mega TV.

'Avghi' brings snow and gale-force winds

Heavy snow at even low altitudes in eastern and southern parts of the country and a drop in temperatures are recorded across Greece on Tuesday.

Based on the forecast, the high pressure in the northwestern Balkans combined with low pressure in the Eastern Mediterranean have given rise to gale-force winds and plunged temperatures, with strong rain in southern parts of the country and the islands. Snow is forecast from Thessaly southward.

Areas that can expect snow on Tuesday include Thessaly and the Sporades islands, eastern Central Greece (Boeotia, Fthiotida), Evia, Attica, the north and east Peloponnese and Crete. Conditions will start to gradually improve from Tuesday night or even Wednesday.

Northerly winds in the Aegean Sea up to 9-10 Beaufort, accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms, keep ships docked at the ports.
