Kef fire risk 21/06/22: Medium (https://www.civilprotection.gr/el/imerisios-hartis-provlepsis-kindynoy-pyrkagias-21062022)

Twenty three new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, two on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8832 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0833 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1322 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9231 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Boris Johnson plans to break rail strikes by allowing use of agency workers

Boris Johnson has responded to the biggest rail strikes in a generation with plans to break the industrial action by allowing firms to bring in agency staff, a move unions have decried as unworkable, unsafe and potentially breaking international law.

As 40,000 workers prepared for Tuesday’s strike, the most wide-reaching on the railways in 30 years, Downing Street brought forward changes to enable employers to replace employees with temporary staff.

The highly controversial measure would make disputes long and bitter, unions warned on Monday, with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) accusing Johnson of taking a step that “even Margaret Thatcher did not go near”.

Carriegate: No 10 admits pressuring The Times to drop Carrie Johnson story
Claim that Johnson tried to install partner in high-paying Foreign Office job denied by wife’s spokesperson

Downing Street has confirmed that members of Boris Johnson’s team intervened following the publication of a story about his wife Carrie in The Times, but denied that the prime minister himself contacted the paper to complain.

The story, which alleged that Mr Johnson had attempted to install Carrie in a £100,000-a-year job in the Foreign Office at a time when he was conducting a secret affair with her, appeared in the first edition of the newspaper on Saturday, but vanished from later copies and a version also disappeared from the Mail Online website.

It claimed that the idea of appointing Ms Johnson – then working in the Conservative Party press office as Carrie Symonds – fell apart when close aides advised against the plan. Mr Johnson was still married to Marina Wheeler at the time.

Giant stingray caught in Mekong ‘biggest freshwater fish ever documented’

An colossal stingray caught in the Mekong river has been touted by scientists as the biggest freshwater fish ever documented.

The 300kg (661lb) female stingray has usurped a 646lb (293kg) giant catfish caught in Thailand in 2005 from its place as the record-holder, scientists say.

The 3.98m long and 2.2m wide fish was fitted with an acoustic tag to track its future movement, before being released back into the river.

The giant freshwater stingray is an endangered species.

Rumours that the government will go to the voters soon - in Greece this is - could be true. Following news that Kef will/may be getting substantial works on the Poros-Argostoli road, a new bridge at Heimonikos, etc, comes news that the Ministry of Finance will be financing renovation works at Agia Efimia to the value of 2,800,000 euros.

Due to be completed sometime in 2026, the work includes widening the sea front for two hundred metres parallel to the coast road, widening of port quays, a 150 metre breakwater, a 200 metre floating platform and paving the sea front and 'pier'. All in addition to the 970,000 euros for repairs and restoration following the Ianos storm.

Summer solstice 2022 marks the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere

Summer officially kicks off in the Northern Hemisphere today (June 21), marking the longest day of the year.

During the June solstice (or summer solstice), the sun reaches its highest and northernmost points in the sky. Delivering the maximum daylight hours of the year for the Northern Hemisphere and minimum daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere, according to Chris Vaughan, amateur astronomer with SkySafari Software who oversees Space.com's Night Sky calendar.

This year, the summer solstice officially occurred at 09:14 GMT, when the sun reached a point directly overhead of the Tropic of Cancer (latitude 23.5 degrees north).

Building permits will be issued without any inspections by a public authority, according to an Environment Ministry draft law.

Mutilated body washed up in northern Greece belonged to Pakistani man

A mutilated corpse that was found last Sunday in the sea off the coast of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, belongs to a 24-year-old Pakistani national, the Coast Guard announced Tuesday.

The body, which was missing the head and lower limbs, was discovered by a fisherman near the area of Halastra who alerted port authorities. The Coast Guard said in a statement on Monday that it bore extensive bruises on the back and hands but there no traces of pre-mortem injuries. It also had a tattoo on the inside of the left arm, depicting an arrow.

The identification was achieved through the fingerprints and a police investigation.

Newborn 'Baby S' found dead at Suffolk waste plant 'may have been shaken or smothered'

A newborn baby girl whose body was found at a waste recycling plant during the first national lockdown may have been shaken or smothered to death, an inquest heard.

The unidentified child, who is known only as Baby S, was found on a conveyor belt on a waste processing line in Suffolk on 14 May 2020, during the first national coronavirus lockdown.

Her body was discovered at the Sackers yard in Needham Market after a delivery of waste from commercial bins. She has never been identified and her family never traced, despite repeated appeals from police.

An inquest in Ipswich on Tuesday heard that the baby was born alive but there were several possible causes of her fatal injuries, including a traumatic birth, shaking or smothering, but a pathologist could not determine which it was.

The strict new rules for holidaymakers travelling to Spain

Spain is one of the most popular destinations for British holidaymakers seeking some sun and sea.

But the country has long suffered from a minority of tourists who disrespect local culture and engage in anti-social behaviour, even if unintentional.

This has prompted a growing number of Spanish towns and cities to tighten up laws ahead of this summer - which is expected to be an extremely busy season after Covid rules were eased.

Here are some of the new rules British holidaymakers travelling to Spain should look out for:
