Sixty three new cases of coronavirus on Kefalonia yesterday and four on Ithaki, according to EODY.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1621
1 USD = € 0.8470

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Bees will die as ministers approve toxic banned pesticide for second time, warn experts

Ministers have given the go-ahead for farmers to use a banned bee-harming pesticide in England for the second year running.

The government went against the advice of its own scientific advisers, who said they did not see the justification for applying the neonicotinoid to sugar beet this year.

A single teaspoon of thiamethoxam is toxic enough to kill 1.25 billion bees, according to biology professor and insect expert Dave Goulson, and wildlife chiefs warned the decision could devastate already-struggling bee populations.

Facebook could be forced to pay £50 to 44 MILLION users in UK if landmark legal action succeeds:
£2.3bn lawsuit claims US tech giant made billions by only granting access to site in exchange for 'highly valuable' personal data

Most British Facebook users could receive a £50 payout if a landmark legal claim launched against the social network over 'unfair' terms and conditions is successful.

Competition law expert Dr Liza Lovdahl Gormsen has brought the class-action lawsuit against Facebook's parent firm Meta at the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal.

The director of the Competition Law Forum has accused the technology giant of abusing its market dominance, and is seeking a minimum of £2.3billion in damages.

The action could see more than 44million people compensated over claims that Facebook used its dominant position to force them to agree to terms and conditions.

It is claimed this allowed the firm to generate billions in revenues from their data, while users received no monetary returns, which the claim labels an 'unfair deal'.

Bring state pension in line with new inflation figures, ministers told
Campaigners urge No 10 to prevent cost of living crisis hitting elderly as April’s pension rise pegged to 3.1pc rate from last September

Pension increases in April should be linked to new inflation forecasts in a one-off effort to tackle the cost of living crisis, campaigners have said.

Campaigners and former pensions ministers called on the Government to step in urgently to protect elderly people, who are already facing a difficult winter of rising energy bills, after City economists revised up their inflation forecasts for this year.

They said that the annual state pension, which will increase by just 3.1 per cent in April, was based on out-of-date figures and should be revised to account for the fact that inflation is likely to peak at more than double that.

Questions over No10 party inquiry after investigators ‘completely blindsided’ by latest revelations

An investigation into lockdown parties at Downing Street has reportedly been "blindsided" by new revelations of rule-breaking.

Sue Gray, a senior civil servant, is investigating claims of illegal gatherings at No10 on the orders of the prime minister.

But questions have been raised about whether her inquiry is getting the full story after The Times newspaper said her probe had been taken off guard by new claims.

The Independent reported this week that some officials have been asked to delete evidence of parties from their phones - a revelation which raised questions about the level of staff cooperation with the probe.

The investigating official is said to be concerned that Downing Street staff are withholding information about parties from her.

It comes after it was claimed on Friday that staff gathered after work for two events on April 16 2021 – the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral.

Staff filled a suitcase with bottles alcohol and danced in the basement of No10, with one special advisor DJ-ing, it was alleged.

There were also further claims on Friday evening by the Daily Mirror newspaper that No10 regularly practiced "wine time Fridays" during the pandemic and even purchased a specialist fridge to store bottles.

Boris Johnson is reported to have regularly witnessed the gatherings and even encouraged staff to let their hair down.

Other claims include the fact that Boris Johnson was so unwilling to follow Covid-19 rules that a chair had to be propped against the door of his room to ensure he would self-isolate.

"He kept coming out so we put two chairs across the door like some kind of puppygate," one figure told The Times.

Covid booster jabs in England to be thrown away as demand falls
Hundreds of thousands of Pfizer and Moderna doses estimated to be about to expire after sharp fall in take-up

Booster jabs distributed in England for the pre-Christmas vaccination push are to be thrown away because of a lack of demand, a leaked NHS memo reveals.

It is not known exactly how many vaccines will be discarded but it is likely to be “hundreds of thousands”, sources told the Health Service Journal (HSJ), which obtained the memo.

Get away from shore - US and Japan warn on tsunami

The US and Japan have advised people on their Pacific coastlines to get away from the shore as a precaution against tsunami waves caused by a volcano eruption in the South Pacific.

Japan has warned of waves as high as three metres, and waves of 1.2 metres hit the south of the country.

The US warned of strong currents and waves, and coastal flooding.

The huge underwater volcanic eruption caused waves of more than a metre to crash into Tonga.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano was heard across the South Pacific, and eventually as far away as the US.

Many parts of Tonga, whose capital is just 65km (40 miles) south of the eruption, are covered in ash and are experiencing a near-total blackout of power, phone lines and internet services. The extent of any injuries or damage is still unclear.
