Kef fire risk 23/06/22: Medium

Forty two new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, ten on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8846 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0837 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1305 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9228 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Just 100 days left to spend paper £20 and £50 notes

The days of spending paper banknotes in the shops are numbered: 100 days, to be exact - so start hunting at home.

Remaining paper £20 or £50 notes should be spent or deposited by the end of September, the Bank of England said.

An estimated 163 million paper £50 banknotes and about 314 million £20 paper notes were still in circulation, the Bank said.

These notes are being replaced with plastic versions, just like the £5 and £10 note, which are more durable.

The Bank said the newer, polymer notes are also harder to counterfeit.

Revealed: Why hamsters die
Beloved family pets meet their maker through a variety of surprisingly grim afflictions, new study finds

Given that the average lifespan of these creatures is just 1.75 years or 21 months, the end tends to come sooner rather than later.

The likeliest fatal disorder turned out to be a nasty sounding condition known as “wet tail”, a bacterial infection brought on by stress often associated with dissatisfaction over their living conditions or treatment that caused 7.33 per cent of the hamsters studied to die of dehydration as a result of diarrhoea.

Arguably even nastier was the second most common: death by bite injuries from violent territorial brawls with other hamsters, which proved mortal in 5.88 per cent of cases.

Perhaps these furry little warlords are not so cuddly after all.

The top five was rounded out by overgrown nails (4.13 per cent), overgrown front teeth (3.98 per cent) and traumatic injury (3.8 per cent), all equally unpleasant ways to go.

Justine Shotton, president of the British Veterinary Association, added: “Hamsters can make good pets but it’s important for their specific welfare needs, such as being nocturnal, to be understood and met and that both owners and vets are aware of the common signs of ill health, so they know when medical intervention is needed.

“It is advisable to speak to a vet before getting any pet, to make sure it is the right animal for all who will be responsible for it.”

Greece Approves First Car Entirely Manufactured in the Country

The first handbuilt passenger car to be entirely manufactured in Greece was presented to the public after receiving its license plates in a special event on Wednesday.

Made by Keraboss Cars Manufacturing, which is headed by Managing Director Stella Kerabos, the cars were the culmination of efforts starting in 2014 when the Government Gazette published the regulatory framework for approving the registration of the so-called Individual Vehicles of Special Construction (MOIK).

The Keraboss “SUPER K” is a new car concept and not just another car, the company says on its website.

Lord Frost accuses Boris Johnson of making ‘factually incorrect statements’

Lord Frost has criticised Boris Johnson as he accused the Prime Minister of making “factually incorrect statements” about employment levels in the UK.

The former Brexit minister said he wished Mr Johnson “would not say things like that which are obviously not true” in reference to a claim made by the PM that there are more people in work now than before the pandemic.

The UK Statistics Authority has previously criticised Mr Johnson for making the employment claim.

Sir David Norgrove, the chairman of the organisation, wrote to Mr Johnson in February and said the claim was “wrong” as he warned against the “selective use of data”.

But that's what BoJo does. He's a liar.

If I heard this correctly Kef had been awarded 1,450,800 euros through the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy to refurbish the seafront strip of Argostoli from the Kavvadias statue to the Port Authority building.

Hit a problem on Kef and some other islands: items to be replaced have be certified by an approved technician and there are no approved a/c technicians on Kef. Hey ho!

Retired public sector workers to get £2,000 pension boost as inflation surges

Millions of retired public sector workers are to be handed an extra £2,000 in their pensions as ministers prepare to increase payments in line with surging inflation.

Former civil servants, teachers and NHS staff are expected to get a 10pc increase in payments from their final salary schemes, equal to an average £1,000 a year. This will be paid in addition to a £1,000 increase in the state pension.

It comes after the Government pleaded for working people to accept a real terms pay cut to prevent price rises from spiralling out of control.

Ministers earlier this week confirmed the return of the "triple lock" for state pensions, meaning they will increase by September's inflation figure, which the Bank of England expects to be around 10pc.

The Government is legally required to increase public sector pensions by the same amount as benefits.
