Truckload of stray cats earmarked for use as food rescued by volunteers in ChinaAs many as 2,800 stray cats in China lived to see the light of another day this week when concerned activists in Wuhan pursued and detained the truck that was carrying them to their fate – as food – in Guangxi Province.The cats, which were were packed tightly into crudely built wooden cages, were on their way to Nanning in Guangxi Province where they were to be killed and butchered — something that, although frowned upon in northern China, is considered acceptable in some areas of the south, particularly amongst older generations.

Seven arrested for baby traffickingSeven people, including five Bulgarians, were arrested on Saturday in Volos, central Greece, on suspicion of involvement in baby trafficking.Investigators said a 62-year-old Greek was detained after he arranged to buy a baby boy born on January 5 at Volos General Hospital for the sum of 5,000 euros. The deal is believed to have been made in September.Police said they also arrested a 24-year-old woman from Bulgaria who gave birth to the baby. A Greek lawyer and his Bulgarian associates have also been arrested.
