Tick warning: Humid weather is perfect for the blood-sucking parasitesAs the weather moves to more humid conditions ticks may become an increasing problem in the UK.The tick, a member of the arachnid family, lives off the blood of animals and humans. The parasite is commonly found on pets such as cats and dogs as they can easily be picked up in grassy areas.Ticks need a warm and humid climate to hatch. On Friday the temperature in Cheltenham hit 17°C but humidity reached as high as 92 per cent during certain parts of the day.
'Tick mops' hailed as good news for landowners and ramblersA scheme that uses sheep to control the numbers of tics on Scottish moorlands has been welcomed by landowners and charities.Sheep grazing on moorlands are being dipped in a pesticide that attracts the blood-sucking parasite and kills them off in huge numbers. The scheme has been welcomed as an effective and harmless method in fighting ticks, which pose a threat to humans by carrying the deadly Lyme disease.New research by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) in the Angus Glens over the last five years has produced staggering results, prompting calls for sheep "tick mops" to be used on farmland across Scotland. The study was launched after fears that ticks were devastating the already under-threat red grouse by passing on louping ill virus, a degenerative brain condition fatal to 80% of red grouse chicks.Since the study began across six Angus estates, covering almost 500 square kilometres, the local tick population has plummeted by 84.6%, allowing red grouse to flourish.

Beware of immigration, say the British expats enjoying sunny SpainIf you find yourself on the Costa Blanca and it’s a pint of Kentish bitter you’re craving, there’s no better place – they have it imported – than the English Speaking Club in El Campello, a small village 20 minutes’ drive north of Alicante. The club’s only rule, as its name suggests: speak English. Founded in 1979, the year that Margaret Thatcher swept to power, the club is a bastion of Britishness. The Union flag flies outside; The Queen’s portrait hangs on the wall; and on Fridays, it’s Fish and Chips night.
All Mac owners should migrate to OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 ASAPUsers should update to OS X 10.10.3, since OS X 10.9.x and older remain un-patched. Systems running OS X 10.8.5, 10.9.5, and 10.10 to 10.10.2, for example, are still vulnerable. If your Mac can't run Yosemite, then you're out of luck.

Apparently quite a lot of them think there are "too many foreigners in the UK" - and using the NHS! And some of them are a bit cut up that after 15 years living in Spain they lose the right to vote in UK elections. Amazing!!Tony

Jean if u can get it, there was a programme on BBC1 last week (I think) called Costa del sol Last Brits Standing and if u could dub the sound and put in english subtitles u would have thought it was some Brits talking about the immigrants here.!!!!!!!!
For 60 years Brits have flocked to the Costa del Sol. Since the launch of package holidays, it has guaranteed us sun, sea and sausage sandwiches. Up to a million Brits moved to Spain for a better life, but after a huge financial crisis, crippling austerity and plummeting property prices, the dream may be over. Figures suggest that 90 thousand Brits resident in Spain left in the last year alone. In this film, director Matt Rudge travels the coast to meet some of the last Brits standing: British business owners struggling to turn a profit, pensioners trapped in negative equity and reliant on the Spanish healthcare system, and young British migrant workers employed in Spanish bars and nightclubs. He meets some ex-pats determined to remain no matter what, and others who are resigned to returning to the UK.But beneath the surface there are simmering tensions between the Spanish public and British immigrants. It seems the UK is far from the only country debating immigration at times of austerity, but in Spain it's the Brits who are the immigrants. So is the British love affair with the Costa del Sol over?

And if the Brits who stay there heard what is said about them, in Greek, the hotel wouldn't be in the top 10,000.
