Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8885 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1254 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1246 USD   $1 USD = 0.8892 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6712 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5983 €UR
1 €UR = R21.2442 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0470 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Self-styled ‘monk’ charged in Thessaloniki dog attacks

A 50-year-old man, who has declared he is a monk living in a cell on Mount Athos, was prosecuted on Monday for the felony of abusing animals following his arrest, after a complaint that he attacked stray dogs with a knife in Thermi, a suburb of Thessaloniki.

The defendant, a Serbian national, appeared before a judicial investigator in the northern port city.

According to the case file, witnesses described the attacker as a man with a beard who tried to injure the dogs.

Being examined by officers of the Thermi police precinct, the 50-year-old reportedly declared that he is a monk and that he lives in a cell on Mt Athos.

Capua: The “Acqui” Division remembers Kefalonia and Corfu, presenting two books on the massacre of September 1943

In recent days, inside the “Oreste Salomone” barracks in Capua, headquarters of the “Acqui” Division, two editorial works were presented: “So the Acqui Division ascended to heaven” by Pier Luigi Villari and “Surrender or fight” by Carlo Palumbo.

The activity, organized in coordination with the European Foundation Kefalonia-Corfu 1941-1944, was moderated by the 1st Lieutenant Alfonzo Zoppardo, Non-Commissioned Officer of the “Acqui” Division.

After a brief greeting from Gen. D. Francesco Bruno, Commander of the “Acqui” Division, the editorial works were presented. In particular, the first book describes how the Soldiers, Sailors, Carabinieri and Financiers of Acqui did not give up and decided to fight to the point of sacrificing their own lives. In the second, the questions that still remain unsolved today were explored in depth, among these, the objectives of General Gandin, the role of the officers who led the Division to refuse the disarmament order and the reasons why the adversaries did not take prisoners.

The tragic story of Oliver, the Husky from Arachova, gets more complicated. A leading vet has declared the dog was sexually maimed by a human, police are unconvinced it wasn't attacked by other animals. Now it's claimed the perpetrator has 'connections' and that's why the police appear to be backing off. Needs sorting.
