Temporary customs union 'could ease Brexit chaos'

A temporary customs union could be put in place to help prevent chaos at Britain's borders after Brexit, the Government has said.

Brexit Secretary David Davis will ask Brussels for an "interim" period to allow a smooth switch over to the new trading regime that will be put in place once the UK leaves.

Large number of migrants located on Zakynthos; traffickers arrested

Fifty nine migrants were spotted by local residents early Monday in Volimes on Zakynthos. The migrants, among them 15 children and two pregnant women, are from Afghanistan, Somalia and Pakistan.

According to first information, traffickers disembarked the migrants on Zakynthos telling them that they are in Italy and left them on the island.

The residents called the local authorities and a coast guard vessel located the traffickers off the coasts of Zakynthos and arrested them.

GPs in England 'unconfident' discussing physical activity with patients – report

Less than two-thirds of doctors feel confident discussing activity levels and almost a third have never heard of national guidelines

Set out in July 2011 by the Chief Medical Office, national guidelines recommend that adults aged between 19 and 64 undertake 75 minutes of intense activity or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week.

But in 2015-16 more than a quarter of adults in England were deemed “inactive”, undertaking physical activity for less than half an hour a week.

Now a nationwide study has revealed that 80% of GPs in England say they are unfamiliar with the national guidelines, and more than one in seven doctors say they are not confident raising the issue of physical activity with their patients.

“Many people have described [physical activity] as the most cost-effective drug we have, yet we are not implementing it properly,” said Justin Varney, co-author of the research from Public Health England.

Give us a cat! MPs plead for a mouser as Parliament's pest control bill hits a record £130,000

The situation has become so dire that Penny Mordaunt MP brought in her own pedigree cat, Titania, to tackle the problem -  before officials banned the practice for breaking health and safety regulations.

While Whitehall boasts five mousers - Larry the Number 10 cat, Palmerston the Foreign Office moggy, Gladstone the Treasury puss and Evie and Ossie from the Cabinet office - Parliament has been left wanting.

Wes Streeting MP asked for a cat, telling The Telegraph: "Luckily, my part of the building isn't infested with mice, but it's time to stop pussy-footing around.

"Lots of staffers are scaredy cats when it comes to mice. A parliamentary cat might not be a purrfect solution, but after a summer of silly season stories about the Tory leadership, this is definitely the Mogg we've been looking for."

Wine is KEY to a longer life: Daily drink can slash the risk of an early death

Can drinking a little bit help you live longer?

Having a little wine or beer to unwind most days may help lower the odds of a premature death as long as that drink or two doesn’t routinely turn into more, a new study confirms.

Compared with people who never had a drop of alcohol, light to moderate drinkers were more than 20 percent less likely to die early of any cause, or of heart disease in particular, the study found.

Heavy drinkers and binge drinkers, however, were at least 10 percent more likely to die from any cause during the study, and they had at least 20 percent higher odds of an early death from cancer in particular.

Potentially gruesome find on Zakynthos: a couple of bones, believed to be human elbow and shin, have been found about 25 metres out to sea at a depth of 2m off Tsilivi, Zakynthos. Sent for further analysis.
