Fire brigade in Corfu catches arsonist red-handed

Investigating officers of Corfu’s fire brigade arrested a man in the early hours of Friday who had just set fire to reeds in an agricultural land at the northern part of the island.

The 30-year-old man, who confessed his actions to the officers, had also tried to set three more fires in nearby fields but didn’t succeed. A prosecutor ordered for the man to be sent to a psychiatric clinic for evaluation after it was revealed he has psychological problems.

Big Ben's Ayrton Light to be switched off

A lamp at the top of Elizabeth Tower - which is switched on in the evening whenever Parliament is sitting - is to stop shining for the first time in more than 70 years.

The Ayrton Light, located above the Great Bell - known as Big Ben - needs to be fully dismantled and restored. A temporary light will replace it.

Installed in 1885, it was previously turned off only during both world wars.

Oops! Reminded me that I need to update the weather charts. August could be a hot one as well!

I have now updated my weather charts. Much depends on how and where measurements are made, but my average for the month of July does not show a significant increase over some previous years. I am awaiting August results with interest!

Priest kills pet dog! Shocking footage! (warning: disturbing video)

A shocking video showing a dead dog with a fresh shot wound to its body has emerged. The horrific footage was captured by a neighbour of a 74-year-old priest, who had allegedly shot his pet with a carbine after stringing it from a tree. The disturbing incident occurred in the village of Epia in Messinia, in the southwest Peloponnese. In the 22-second video the man who videoed the incident can be heard saying that the priest killed the dog a short while before. The priest was taken into custody after the man who captured the footage informed law enforcement authorities. According to local news site eleftheriaonline.gr, the priest told police he killed his dog because it suffered from a debilitating disease and wanted to prevent it from dying a painful death.
