Government names trial areas for 'full fibre' broadband

Six areas in the UK will soon be trying out broadband technology that provides data at speeds approaching one gigabit per second (gbps).

Businesses, schools and hospitals will be the first to try out the "full fibre" network technology.

The pilots will be run in Aberdeenshire, West Sussex, Coventry and Warwickshire, Bristol, West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

Frankfurt hospitals evacuated before WW2 bomb disposal

Patients at hospitals in Frankfurt have been moved to prepare for the controlled explosion of a huge bomb left over from World War Two.

The 1.4 tonne British bomb, found on a building site on Wednesday, will be made safe on Sunday.

About 65,000 people must leave their homes and police have said they will imprison anyone who refuses to go.

It is Germany's biggest post-war evacuation. A smaller one took place on Saturday in Koblenz.

It's obvious when you think about it. All the major building materials - concrete, bricks, glass, are made using sand. Exploding population numbers and the knock on need for development have made sand the second most used natural commodity on the planet after water. Billions and billions of tonnes are being used across the globe.

The sand used for construction comes mainly from riverbeds and oceans. Desert sand, it turns out, is too smooth for the mix. Huge projects quickly exhausted Dubai's marine sand supply, so, despite being a city built on sand, it now imports the material from Australia.

The irony: sand has become such a precious commodity it is literally being sold to the Arabs.

Greece 1 : 2 Belgium

Belgium became the first European side to join hosts Russia at next summer's World Cup finals as goals from Jan Vertonghen and Romelu Lukaku gave them victory in Greece.

All three goals came in a five-minute second-half period, which began with Vertonghen firing Belgium ahead.

Zeca brought Greece level soon after but Lukaku scored the final goal with a glancing header a minute later.

Belgium lead Group H by eight points with two games to play.

Bosnia-Herzegovina have moved ahead of Greece in the race to claim a play-off spot as Edin Dzeko scored twice in a 4-0 win in Gibraltar to take them up to second place.
