Consumers told to stop buying 'fire-risk' fridgesAccording to research by Which? there are at least 236 such models on sale, representing nearly half the market... But because it believes the danger is relatively low, it is not calling for millions of existing appliances to be recalled... there is no evidence that anyone has been killed or injured as a direct result of flammable plastic backs. Which? examined 506 fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers that are currently on sale in the UK, and found that 46% of those do not have fully flame-proof backs.Of 26 Hotpoint models they examined, only one had fire-resistant backing. None made by Ikea had one, and of 12 Indesit models, only two had the safety feature.By contrast, all the models made by Beko, Bosch, Grundig, LG, Miele, Samsung and Siemens were fully protected. Most of these have metal backs.
