Grape expectations in GreeceGreece, the second-largest producer of table grapes in the European Union, should see an increase in production and exports for the 2017/18 campaign.The EU took on the majority of Greece's grape exports in 2016/17, a share of 96.91 per cent, led by Germany (22,738 tonnes), the UK (13,808 tonnes) and Romania.It is anticipated that the country's apple production will slide 5.2 per cent to 282,000 tonnes, mainly due to the hail that occurred in the apple growing areas of northern Greece.Pear production, meanwhile, is expected to jump 13.8 per cent.
Greeks getting “virtual divorces” to save money!Divorces in Greece are on the rise, as married couples are trying to take advantage of laws that favour singles regarding tax cuts. With increased financial burdens due to hyper taxation by the Greek government, couples are opting to get “white divorces” (a mutually agreed separation or a virtual divorce) to save money from the tax office, benefit from the 50% discount that singles enjoy on the ENFIA property tax, lower electricity bills and to be eligible for social welfare allowances.

Major Athens-based forgery and smuggling gang bustedGreek police and Europol have dismantled a gang dealing in forged identification documents and people smuggling in a large-scale operation code-named Taurus.Some 20 arrests have been made while forgery workshops have been identified in four Athens neighborhoods – Pangrati, Neos Cosmos, Patissia and Koliatsou – where the gang produced passports, driver’s licenses, residence permits and ID cards and supplied them to foreign nationals wishing to travel to other EU countries, mainly the United Kingdom.
Greek Government Under Fire for Decision to Increase Highway Speed LimitMinister Christos Spirtzis recently stated that after the approval of the authorities, the renewed R.T.C. will enable the rise of speed limits from the current 130 km/hr, to 150 km/hr.
