Kef fire risk 21/10/22: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8988 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0105 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1126 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9896 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Boris Johnson tells Tories: I can save party from election wipeout
Former PM sees chance of return after Liz Truss leaves Downing Street as shortest-serving leader in UK history

Boris Johnson is privately urging Conservative MPs to back him for a dramatic return to Downing Street with a pledge that only he can win the Tories the next election.

Mr Johnson is flying back from a holiday in the Caribbean as early as Friday and a meeting of backers for a campaign led by Jacob Rees-Mogg is being organised for Saturday.

Tories fear party split if Boris Johnson returns following dramatic Liz Truss resignation

Conservative MPs have warned that the party could split if Boris Johnson returns as leader following the dramatic resignation of Liz Truss after just 45 days as prime minister.

Sir Roger Gale, the first MP to declare he had submitted a letter of no confidence in Johnson, told The Independent: “While he is under investigation for misleading the House, there is no way he should be considered for any government position, never mind prime minister.

“He would be just as divisive as he previously was – we want a unity candidate, not a division candidate.”

Sir Roger said that “quite a few” MPs could be expected to refuse to take the Tory whip if Johnson returned.

And another backbencher said he knew of at least one colleague who would cross the floor to Labour rather than serve under Johnson.

Meanwhile, former cabinet minister David Davis said that “a lot of people would be worried about the party” if the ex-PM returned.

Starmer joins calls for Truss to decline ex-PMs’ £115,000 annual grant
Outgoing PM urged to forgo allowance amid cost of living crisis and cuts to public services

Keir Starmer has joined calls for Liz Truss to decline the allowance of up to £115,000 a year she will be entitled to as a former prime minister.

The Labour leader told ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Friday: “She should turn it down. I think that’s the right thing to do. She’s done 44 days in office, she’s not really entitled to it, she should turn it down and not take it.”

The Liberal Democrat leader, Ed Davey, also said she should turn down the allowance.

The political leaders’ remarks come after a trade union representing civil servants hit out at the entitlement to the perk amid a mounting squeeze on public services and the cost of living crisis.

Liberal Democrat leader, Ed Davey, has also said she should not claim the money.

"Most people have to work at least 35 years to get a full state pension," Mr Davey told LBC radio. "I think working 45 days shouldn't give you a pension that is many many times what ordinary people out there get after a lifetime of work"

Fines, lies and chaos: a reminder of Boris Johnson’s time as PM

When Boris Johnson resigned as prime minister three and a half months ago, some naively believed the most chaotic days of Conservative government were over. Compared with the six white-knuckle weeks of the Liz Truss project, however, the Johnson years may start to feel like the good old days of calm and order.

That’s what the former prime minister seems to be hoping, at least, as he scrambles home from holidaying in the Caribbean, apparently in a an attempt to reclaim the keys to Downing Street.

So it may be worth recalling the reasons why no fewer than 57 of Johnson’s ministers resigned from his government in July to force him out of Downing Street, believing his leadership no longer tenable. Here is a reminder.

Liz Truss to hand out resignation honours – after just 44 days as PM
Downing Street said it was the convention that all outgoing Prime Ministers issue such lists

It could mean Ms Truss’s chief of staff Mark Fulbrook would be in line for an honour. His appointment last month was hugely controversial because he continues to hold a 10 per cent stake in a lobbying business with disreputable clients.

She could also give an award to Kwasi Kwarteng, who she was forced to sack as Chancellor last week.

The news comes as Westminster waits for Boris Johnson’s resignation honours, which have still not been published.

Penny Mordaunt to stand for Tory leadership

Penny Mordaunt has become the first Conservative MP to say they will run to replace Liz Truss as prime minister.

The Commons leader said she was standing to "unite our country" and win the next general election.

Rishi Sunak is also thought to be a likely candidate, and has got the most public nominations from MPs so far.

Boris Johnson has not ruled out a dramatic comeback, months after being forced out of No 10 after a Tory revolt.

The former prime minister has 39 MPs backing him, behind his former chancellor Rishi Sunak with 66 declared backers so far.

Damning partygate evidence means Boris Johnson could be ‘gone by Christmas’

Conservative sources claim that if Boris Johnson returns as prime minister he could be ‘gone by Christmas’, due to damning new evidence about the partygate scandal which brought him down.

Several people familiar with the Privileges Committee’s investigation into whether Boris Johnson misled MPs over parties in No10 have spoken to ITV News.

They say that a large amount of damaging evidence from inside No10 has already been handed over to Harriet Harman, who is chairing the inquiry.

Tourist drowns while bathing on Crete

A 43-year-old tourist drowned while swimming in the sea at Almyrida, near Hania on Crete, on Friday.

Local reports say the man was from Finland and had gone to the beach with his family.

The man fell unconsciousness in unclear circumstances and had died before an ambulance reached the scene.

While the local beach continues to attract bathers, mostly tourists, lifeguard services stopped at the end of the season on 1 October.

Greece in shock over multiple child sexual abuse cases
As more harrowing evidence is revealed over the rape and repeated exploitation of the 12-year-old girl in Athens four more rape and child sexual abuse cases shake Greek society

Physical and sexual abuse of children increased dramatically during the pandemic in Greece, with sexual abuse of girls almost doubling from 2020 to 2022, according to the Forensic Service of Thessaloniki.

Between 2004 and 2008, a total 56 incidents involving sexual abuse and 20 involving physical abuse were examined, while from 2020 to October 2022 a total of 72 children with physical injuries and 60 underage boys and 88 underage girls were examined for sexual abuse. From the numbers examined, 60 per cent were deemed as child sexual abuse.
