Kef fire risk 21/08/23: Very high

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8806 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1193 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1356 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8934 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

As new wildfires broke in the region of Alexandroupolis-Feres in Greece, the EU is deploying 2 rescEU firefighting planes based in Cyprus and 1 firefighting team from Romania via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

In total, 56 firefighters and 10 vehicles should arrive in the country still today. In addition, 1 pre-deployed ground firefighting team from France is already operating in Greece as a part of the EU’s wildfire season preparedness plan.

Shore wars: Greeks battle to save beaches from invasion of commercial sunbeds
Protesters demand end to the illegal spread of loungers and say sands must be free for all

In the depth of August, when the cicadas sing and the sun burns bright, Archilochos cultural centre on Paros is not usually a hive of activity. If anything, that is reserved for the bars and beaches of a Cycladic isle increasingly drawing le beau monde.

But last week, as Greece’s great summer exodus peaked, the Archilochos was alive to the sound of debate. And, as in weeks gone past, it was a debate ignited by the state of play on the beaches that have become synonymous with pricey sunbeds and greedy entrepreneurs.

From its inception, the protest movement has had a single aim: to reclaim beaches from private rental outfits hogging prime coastal areas with exorbitantly-priced sun loungers and shadings. The takeover, which has seen enterprises charge as much as €120 (£102) for sunbeds on Paros, has been described as unconstitutional in a country where the protection of the natural and cultural environment is enshrined in law as “a duty of the state and a right of every person”.

Often, campaigners contend, there is no space to spread out a towel or beach mat because of the paraphernalia deposited on beaches by business interests, with those who dare to complain being shooed away. For many, the root of the problem lies in murky concession agreements that allow local authorities to lease shoreline to hoteliers and bar and restaurant owners provided, in theory, they exploit only 50% of the allocated space.

Secluded Greek Island Offers Generous Incentives to Attract New Residents

Nestled at the edge of the Aegean Sea, between Crete and the Greek mainland, Antikythera is a picturesque haven inhabited by a mere 68 individuals. In an effort to address its dwindling population, the island is extending a unique proposition.

Families, especially those with young members, who choose to embark on a 45-minute flight from Athens and establish their residence in Antikythera stand to receive a monthly allowance of 500 euros (£426) for a span of three years. This accumulates to a total of 18,000 euros (£15,400).
