Giorgos Karatzaferis: "Greece should hold a referendum on same-sex marriage; Family unit is dissolving"

Giorgos Karatzaferis spoke to ANT1 about Stefanos Kasselakis and Tyler's wedding on Thursday in New York and commented that Greece should hold a referendum on same-sex marriage.

Karatzaferis is a former leader of the right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally political party and ex-member of New Democracy who has previously made anti-Semitic statements. Kasselakis is an America-educated entrepreneur who was recently elected president of Syriza following the resignation of Alexis Tsipras. Openly gay, on Thursday he married Tyler McBeth in a civil ceremony in America as Greek law extends only to cohabitation agreements for same-sex couples. Kasselakis has expressed the couple’s desire to adopt children, which they cannot currently do in Greece.

Priest smashes Halloween pumpkins carved by local kids over fears of 'satanic symbols'
Father Jaromir Smejkal, from Kurdejov in the Czech Republic, destroyed a number of carved pumpkins left near his church as part of his role to "protect families from hidden evil"

Zakynthos continues to rival Corfu for the title 'Wild West of Greece': on Thursday four Greek natives attacked three locals with Albanian nationality after an argument outside a bar. One of the Greeks produced a gun and fired at the Albanians, fortunately missing. Police have arrested three Greeks and charged them with assault and attempted murder, appears the gunman has gone into hiding.

Recycling reforms see separate food waste bins for England

Most households will have a weekly food waste collection by early 2026 and there will now be a standardised list of items that councils must recycle.

The government says the new rules are designed to make recycling simpler and to avoid people needing what it called an "excessive number of bins."

Wildfire breaks out in Corfu, two villages evacuated

A wildfire broke out in northwestern Corfu on Saturday, in the area between the villages of Agios Stefanos and Avliotes, said the Fire Brigade.

Residents there received an evacuation order via the emergency number 112, as the fire was reportedly fast approaching people's homes and was also threatening hotels in the area.

Some 32 firefighters with 16 fire engines are battling the blaze.
