Alternate Labor Minister Rania Antonopoulou resigned on Monday, only a few days after an embarrasing report emerged that she had applied for and received up to 23,000 euros in a housing stipend up until August 2017.

Antonopoulou and her husband, Economy Minister Dimitri Papadimitriou, are among the wealthiest members of the current Tsipras Cabinet, with their assets valued in the millions of euros.

Her resignation was accepted by Greek PM Alexis Tsipras.

Labor Minister promises hike in minimum monthly wages after current bailout ends

Greece's relevant social insurances and labor minister stressed, in an interview with "N", that the government's "central political goal" is to increase the minimal monthly wage scale in the country.

Efi Achtsioglou also added that the leftist-rightist coalition government wants to overturn a trend of falling wages in the country.

Greece temporarily shuts Corinth canal for ships after rockfall

Greece on Monday closed the Corinth canal after a rockfall that followed heavy rain, temporarily blocking a transit route used mainly by commercial ships and pleasure yachts.

The 6.4-km canal serves about 11,000 ships a year, offering a short transit from southern Italy to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, saving mariners a 700-km (434-mile) journey around the Peloponnese Peninsula. But its 21.5-metre (64-foot) width means it is not a key waterway for ocean-going vessels.

The canal’s operator will need about 15 days to restore it, the official said.

First conceptualised in ancient times, the canal took some 11 years to be built and start operations in 1893.

UK hit as global raisin supplies dry up

The UK has been hit by a global shortage of raisins, sultanas and currants.

Britain - the world's biggest importer of dried fruit - has seen the price of raisins and sultanas rise by 42% since September, leading suppliers have said.

They blame falling numbers of raisins in California for pushing up prices.

Bakeries say increases are unlikely to affect the cost of hot cross buns - but an industry analyst warned this year's Christmas puddings could be hit.

Jara Zicha, a market analyst in the UK, said... rising supply costs in the UK had been exacerbated by the fact Greece was also producing fewer currants.

Fears were initially raised over the cost of Easter hot cross buns. However, several bakeries told the BBC the current shortage has come too late to affect hot cross bun costs this year.
