Light rain here all morning till lunchtime, still cloudy, not particularly warm, cool breeze.   = Typical English "summer".   :(

The heatwave: A one day wonder?

Tonight, temperatures are unlikely to slide much below 20C (68F) and it'll remain warm, humid and stuffy - meaning a restless night's sleep for many.

Then tomorrow, it's all change once more.

Relatively cooler air will drift in from the Atlantic, bringing thunderstorms and a slightly more comfortable conditions.

It will stay pleasant, however, with temperatures reaching 25C to 26C (77F to 78.8F) - just in time for Wimbledon.

Global heating: London to have climate similar to Barcelona by 2050
Nearly 80% of cities to undergo dramatic and potentially disastrous changes, study finds

London will have a similar climate in three decades’ time to that of Barcelona today, according to research – but if that seems enticing, a warning: the change could be accompanied by severe drought.

The researchers have created an interactive map showing hundreds of cities and their 2050 counterparts.

UK weather forecast: Rain expected to spoil British summer sun next week
While rain is expected to sweep in towards end of week, summer heat will still persist

The summer sun is expected to give way to persistent rain next week as a band of wet weather heads in from the west.

The nation is set to bake across the weekend with temperatures reaching as much as 24C in the South West on Saturday, and highs of 20C in Glasgow.

And the evenings will continue to be warm, with much of the country expected to be reaching temperatures of 15C overnight.

But while the mercury will likely reach the 20C mark across most of the UK over the weekend, possibly thundery showers are predicted to hit the north and west as early as Tuesday.

That rainy weather is expected to spread to the rest of the UK across Wednesday and Thursday, as a thick band of rain sweeps across the nation from the South right across to the North.

UK weather forecast: Heatwave to sweep country next week as 34C temperatures forecast
Thunderstorm and rain warnings in place for some places this weekend before mercury soars

Forecasters are predicting a north-south divide in the weather, with northwestern parts set to see spells of rain, which could be heavy at times, as well as strong winds.

However experts predict temperatures could soar to 34C in places on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing “hot and humid” conditions.

Holidaymakers heading to Europe for the start of the school holidays next week could also find themselves seeking shelter as temperatures rise into the 40s.

Popular tourist spots in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Greece are all set to be hit by the heatwave.

UK weather: July could see hottest night-time temperature since 1948

For us the heat will peak Tuesday, Wednesday and into Thursday. Unlike a few weeks ago we had a one day wonder of 34C expect temperatures to exceed 30C for two or three days.

It’s notable such hot and humid air will lead to uncomfortable, stuffy, muggy nights with temperatures not slipping much below 25C - we potentially will have one of our warmest July nights since 1948.

Scorching 39C temperatures may spark thunderstorms, trigger travel delays, flash flooding, and power cuts

A yellow weather warning is in force for most of England, except the south-west, and parts of Scotland from 3pm on Thursday until 4am on Friday.

UK weather: Heatwave broke record for highest ever temperature, Met Office says

The record for the highest temperature officially recorded in the UK was set last Thursday as a heatwave gripped the country, the Met Office has confirmed.

A temperature of 38.7C was recorded at Cambridge Botanic Garden, exceeding the previous record of 38.5C set in Faversham, Kent, in August 2003.

The figure was first announced as a provisional temperature on Friday and has now been validated by the Met Office observations team.

Parts of North Yorkshire and the West Midlands were hit with flash flooding this evening as the Met Office issued weather warnings for across the UK.

People this evening reported cars being swept away, businesses flooding and bridges collapsing.

Routes around Swaledale and Wensleydale were left impassable tonight due to the amount of water on the ground.

Due to "intense downpours" a flood warning was put in place for Arkle Beck at Reeth and Low Fremington, the Environment Agency said, after a driver had to be rescued from the boot of their car near Reeth.

It added that river levels were expected to "rise significantly overnight" and it was "monitoring the situation closely".

UK weather: Summer to return ahead of bank holiday weekend as temperatures forecast to soar
Temperatures of 26C possible as warmer weather predicted across country

Hot weather is predicted to return to parts of the UK in time for the August bank holiday weekend after a wet and windy start to the month.

Parts of the southeast could see high temperatures of 26C, particularly in London where many people will be preparing for the Notting Hill Carnival.

Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said high temperatures in the mid-20s were most likely by the bank holiday weekend.

Before then, the UK will see blustery showers over the next few days with sunny spells and maximum temperatures of about 21C in the south and 19C in the north.
