Kef fire risk 01/08/23: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8834 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1354 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1320 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8807 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

62 forest fires broke out in 24 hours

A total of 62 forest fires broke out in a 24-hour period that lasted until Monday evening, with most being immediately dealt with at their initial stage, according to a statement by the Fire Service.

The Fire Service is also urging people to be particularly careful and, in case of fire, for their own safety to follow the instructions of the competent authorities.

Affordable housing schemes: 'Invisible' renters earning £30k not eligible

People earning more than £30,000 are being told they don't have enough money to qualify for so-called affordable rent schemes in London.

Under the deals, renters on lower incomes should be able to secure homes at rates below market value.

But the BBC has found that some landlords insist on applicants earning between £35,000 and £60,000 to stand any chance of being accepted.

Drinks to become more expensive in alcohol tax shake-up

Many drinks could become more expensive from Tuesday under changes to the way alcohol is taxed.

The new system aims to encourage drinkers to cut back by taxing all alcohol based on its strength - meaning wine is set to become more expensive, but beer cheaper.

Despite criticism from hospitality groups, the prime minister has insisted businesses and consumers will benefit from the changes.

Brexit: Liz Truss mini-Budget saw EU divorce bill soar by £91m

Liz Truss’s mini-Budget caused the UK’s EU divorce bill to soar by tens of millions of pounds because of the resulting crash in the value of the pound.

The disastrous tax-cutting plan piled an extra £91m on the UK’s payments to the bloc required as part of the deal to leave, Treasury documents show.

Greece's government is planning tougher penalties for arson following a spate of wildfires

Greek authorities are planning tougher penalties for arson — with fines to be increased to 10 times the current level — following a spate of major wildfires that have already caused more damage than the 2022 annual total.

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said details of the measures would be announced next month, but added that fines for causing fires deliberately or because of negligent behavior would match penalties introduced two years ago for the abuse of animals. Those carry a fine of up to 50,000 euros ($55,000) and a maximum jail sentence of 10 years.

“I am obliged to say that the next fire season will find us in a different position, It’s not just the penalties — the fines will increase tenfold — but we need a ... change in mentality,” Kikilias said in an interview with state television late Monday. The changes, he said, would include school programs and locally based initiatives to promote forest fire prevention awareness.

Unwrapping Kefalonia’s grown-up side: How the Captain Corelli Greek island went from sleepy to sophisticated

There seems to be an unspoken rule that you can’t mention the Ionian isle of Kefalonia without also mentioning Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Louis de Bernières’ 1994 literary gem (and 2001 film) set on the island against the backdrop of WWII. Even though it’s been nearly 30 years since the novel’s debut, no fewer than three people brought it up to me during a recent trip, which is fair enough.

Casting the island as a rustically charming and authentically Greek destination, the story has helped cement Kefalonia’s reputation as a firm holiday favourite among the British. But these days, there’s more to talk about. A crop of smart new openings, from restaurants to retreats, has infused the quiet island with a breath of fresh air; one that’s decidedly more grown-up, sophisticated and three-dimensional.

Hm, I was quite happy with Kef the way it was  :dunno:
