Kef fire risk 01/10/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8892 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0855 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1246 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9212 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Unconfirmed: explosion in the kantina at Platys Yialos beach, Lassi, last night. Allegedly no accident, appears someone placed gas canisters around the building. Additionally, tables and chairs belonging to the kantina said to have been thrown into the sea.  Police investigating.

The African Greeks of Avato

Avato is a village in Northern Greece that is home to the Greek descendants of the African slaves that were once brought to the region of Xanthi.

Behind the African looks of these Greeks, there is a painful story that goes hundreds of years back. Their roots date back to Ottoman times when their ancestors were brought to Avato as slaves from Sudan.

The African Greeks of Avato are bilingual. They speak Greek and Turkish. Until the 1950s, they were still working under conditions of slavery at the farms of white farmers in Northern Greece, they say.

Another ‘wonky’ pub has been set on fire five miles from Crooked House

Police are investigating after a historic pub went up in flames just miles away from the Crooked House ruins.

Fire crews raced to the Greyhound and Punchbowl, in Wolverhampton, just before 4am on Saturday.

Despite their best efforts much of the pub’s interior and parts of the outside were destroyed.

West Midlands Fire Service believe the fire was started deliberately and police are investigating.
