Kythira National Airport is now officially known as “Alexandros Aristotelous Onassis.”

The name change of the island’s airport was based on the example of many Greek airports that have taken names of important historical figures.

The Municipality of Kalambaka, in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece, is expected to be known soon as the “Municipality of Meteora,” according to a decision taken recently by the city council.

The decision for the name change was taken on the grounds that few professionals in the wider tourism industry know the destination as “Kalambaka” and mainly refer to it as “Meteora.”

The name change is expected to help enhance the region’s tourism industry.

Luxury travel is included in the strategic development plan of Greek tourism.

The plan will include guidelines for the development of large tourism resorts designed to accommodate a range of  top quality infrastructure such as golf courses, marinas, spa facilities, conference centers and holiday homes.
