Police arrest 8 minors for firebombing a high school, parents for negligence; no injuries or damageEight minors, 16 years old, were arrested by police after attacking a high school in the Moschato southwest suburb of Athens with firebombs on Thursday.According to Greek police, around 14:00 the group threw 3 firebombs in the courtyard of the 2nd High School of Moschato and ran away. Of the three firebombs, only one exploded, without injuring anyone or creating damage. The minors were arrested by the police's motorcycle unit (Dias) and taken to the suburb's police station.In addition, police also arrested their parents, for negligence in a minor's supervision. The minors were expected to be led before a prosecutor.
Europe’s First Center for Aquatic Animal Welfare to Open in Crete, GreeceThe island of Crete in Greece has been chosen as the location for the opening of the first European Aquatic Animal Protection Center.The decision was announced after discussions between Greek Agriculture Minister Lefteris Avgenakis and EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides during a recent meeting of EU agriculture and fisheries ministers in Luxembourg.The future EU Reference Center for Aquatic Animal Protection will be based at the University of Crete. It will work jointly with the Biological Center of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and the University of Barcelona. The center’s goal is to make a valuable contribution to the formation of EU policy frameworks. It will also aim to lead cutting-edge research related to the welfare of aquatic organisms.

Using AI to fight forest fires - technology can be an ally against climate change, minister tells ANAIt took just two minutes to pinpoint the precise location of a plume of smoke within a 2.5-kilometre radius on Mount Penteli and send the coordinates to link up with fire brigade systems, during a trial using artificial intelligence applications to aid fire fighting, Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Friday. He said the proposed digital solution include tools such as long-range microcameras and Lidar sensors, which can be installed on existing infrastructure such as mobile phone towers and television transmitters in forest areas. He said these were chosen because they already have an electricity supply and offer security against theft.The systems being planned to help fight fires will use AI technology to locate smoke plumes and automatically send geolocation data to the fire brigade, while they can also help investigations into cases of arson by precisely recording the time and location where small fires start, while the cameras can also detect people and vehicles.
Tomato imports to Greece increased substantiallyTomato imports in Greece have increased by leaps and bounds recently.According to the data of the fruit and vegetable exporters of the Incofruit - Hellas Association, from 1/9 to 19/10/2023, Greece imports amounted to 8,677 tons (against 3,750 tons in 2022), of which from Turkey 5,704 tons (against 3,724 tons last year)."Certainly, the consumers did not see anywhere that they were buying Turkish tomatoes," the greenhouse horticultural producer from Gargaliani, Mr. Asimakis Demeroukas, tells AgroTypos. And he adds: "And while we see that we consume imported vegetables in Greece, Morocco has managed to be a key supplier of tomatoes to Europe.Suffice it to say that in 2021, around 67% of fresh tomato imports into the EU came from Morocco.
Decision signed for electronic register of bridgesInfrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras signed a decision on Friday to create a data base for Greece’s bridges, the ministry said.The platform’s aim is to provide the relevant services with the right tools for a comprehensive system of recording, inspecting, evaluating and maintaining the country’s stock of bridges, exceeding six metres.The data base will outline the rules and procedures for inspection and maintenance, the obligations of the services involved and the methodology for monitoring the state of bridges and for their repair and maintenance.
Senior nabbed for dog abuseA man was arrested in Xylokastro, Corinthia, in the Peloponnese, on Friday for tying his pet dog to his pickup truck then dragging the animal along a road as he drove the vehicle.Police arrested the 86-year-old after launching an investigation on Thursday in response to a public outcry and complaints by outraged citizens over a video of the incident showing the dog struggling to keep up with the moving vehicle on a road in Xylokastro.The man has been charged with violating the law on cruelty to pets, according to state broadcaster ERT.It was the latest in a string of incidents of animal cruelty despite the stricter laws and fines introduced by the Greek state.
