Unconfirmed but quite possibly true: a 35 y-o local Greek male on Levkas yesterday had a fortunate escape after he was bitten by a Latrodectus tredecimguttatus, a.k.a. Mediterranean black widow / European black widow spider. It's likely the man had been working outside his property and the spider entered a shoe or glove for shelter during a work break. Although potentially painful the bite is only rarely fatal to humans.

Death in Paradise reveals new star as it ditches ‘middle-aged white guys’

Don Gilet will be the new lead detective in Death in Paradise as the BBC show gives the fish-out-of-water theme a new twist.

Gilet, who previously appeared in one episode in the fourth series of the show, will play DI Mervin Wilson, a Londoner who arrives on the island of Saint Marie and “isn’t overly pleased with his new surroundings”.
An article captured on archive.ph from the Daily Telegraph

Bye 'eck, a black British actor playing a serving black British police officer on a (fictional) British Overseas Territory in the Eastern Caribbean. Whatever next!?!  :dunno:

False evidence by Post Office’s expert contradicted his own report

A senior Fujitsu engineer made a false statement to court about the flawed Post Office IT system, contradicting a report he had written days earlier.

The BBC has obtained Gareth Jenkins' 2010 statement, which helped wrongly jail pregnant postmistress Seema Misra.

It said there were "no cases" where branch accounts could be altered without postmasters' knowledge.

But he had just produced a Post Office report which proposed remotely altering data in branches to fix a bug.

Mr Jenkins, Fujitsu's former chief IT architect, is currently being investigated by the Metropolitan Police for potential perjury, the BBC understands.

Police on Crete seize thousands of illegal firecrackers

Police on the island of Crete arrested a man on Thursday accused of possessing and trading thousands of firecrackers and flares, which are illegally used during Easter celebrations in Greece.

Specifically, the Rethymno Police Department conducted an investigation at the business of the suspect in the area of Mylopotamos, and confiscated a total of 52,800 firecrackers.

The Hellenic Police has urged the public and parents in particular to be vigilant: “The manufacture, sale, purchase, possession and use of firecrackers and firecrackers by anyone is prohibited. Inform children of the risks of serious injury, dismemberment and even death,” said a police statement.
