Killer claims his life sentence is served because he briefly died

A court in the US has refused to release a convict who argued that he had completed his life sentence when he briefly "died".

Benjamin Schreiber, 66, was sentenced to life without parole in Iowa for bludgeoning a man to death in 1996.

He said his sentence ended when his heart stopped during a medical emergency four years ago, even though he was revived.

But judges said Schreiber's bid - while original - was "unpersuasive".

GREECE: Is Mitsotakis determined to sell-off state assets to the Chinese?

Whereas the US and EU partners seem unperturbed by Chinese investments in the Greek energy sector, they are cautiously watching the ports’ investments which will rival Rotterdam and Hamburg.

Mercury transit visible from Greece on Monday

People in Greece will be able to witness a rare celestial show on Monday as Mercury passes between the sun and Earth, a phenomenon that is not expected to occur again until 2032.

The transit of Mercury is expected to be spotted in Greece shortly after 2.30 p.m. and will last for around five hours, according to experts.

For aficionados who do not have the equipment to view the phenomenon, it will be broadcast live around the world by NASA TV.

Readers are reminded that staring at the sun or trying to view it with telescopic equipment can seriously damage the eyes or cause blindness.

Refugees arriving in Greece seems to be last years news but it's still happening on a large scale, so much so that islands such as Lesbos can't cope with the number of arrivals. The solution promoted by the government is to send refugees back, where possible, but in the meantime to spread them out around the country. Locally it's alleged the 'new' MP for Kefalonia & Ithaka, Panayis Kappatos, has stated that 400 refugees should be accommodated on Kefalonia. Other sources say he said no more than four hundred. There's been various rumours about the imminent arrival of refugees on Kefalonia but, so far as I'm aware, there's no definite plans for this to happen at the moment.
