Kef fire risk 14/08/23: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8901 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1334 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1235 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8823 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Fire in the hills above Agia Eirini, outside Poros. Being tackled by fire dept. and local volunteer group.

Last I heard, fire is burning through the night, firefighters are requesting bottled water to quench their thirst in the heat. Not sure how practical it is to drive out that way to deliver it, I think a collection point is being established.

Fire spread over night across a large area, now being tackled by thirty two firefighters with ten vehicles, another twenty six firefighters and ten vehicles arrived from Kyllini early this morning and three 'planes, presumably Candairs, have arrived from Araxos to complement the two local PZLs.

UK man bitten by cat contracts previously unknown and ‘extensive’ bacterial infection
Findings highlight role of cats as reservoirs of ‘as yet undiscovered bacterial species’

While the man was treated for potential infection, administered a booster dose of the tetanus vaccine, given a number of oral antibiotics and discharged, he returned to the emergency department 24 hours later with an infection in his left little and right middle fingers.

Doctors then surgically removed the damaged tissue around his wounds and gave him three other antibiotics intravenously – a treatment that ultimately seemed to work and led to a recovery.

Wildfire on Kefalonia under Control

A wildfire that broke out on the island of Kefalonia the previous day, burning mixed agricultural land and forest in Aghia Irini, was now under control, the fire brigade reported on Monday.

The blaze was put out chiefly with the assistance of firefighting aircraft that took off at dawn and battled the fire in the inaccessible terrain surrounding Aghia Irini.

The chief of Kefalonia Fire Brigade Stavros Travlos said that “there was a major wildfire, over 40 hectares of land have been burnt”.

An uncrewed boat adrift off Vardiani, Palliki, was towed into Argostoli port earlier today. No marine pollution observed, Port Authority to investigate.
