British Museum experts discover ancient Iraqi civilisation worshipped Alexander the Great as a god British Museum experts could have solved an archeological mystery after discovering a temple where Alexander the Great may have been proclaimed divine.Experts working on the ancient city of Girsu in southern Iraq unearthed a 4,000-year-old Sumerian temple, so old that later extremely cryptic Greek inscriptions found at the site made no historical sense.British Museum archeologists now believe the site boasted a Greek temple possibly commissioned by Alexander the Great himself to honour ancient gods and his own divine status.
Retired generals call for coup to eject Spain’s Socialist PMA group of retired military officers in Spain have called for an army coup against the prime minister after Pedro Sánchez secured a new term through a controversial amnesty for Catalan separatists. In a letter, 51 retired officers ask “those responsible for the defence of constitutional order for the dismissal of the prime minister and the calling of general elections”.Mr Sánchez’s Socialist Party came second in July’s elections, but he managed to cobble together sufficient support from hard-Left and regional parties to win approval from the majority in Congress.Taking the oath before King Felipe VI at the Zarzuela Palace near Madrid on Friday, Mr Sánchez was sworn in again as prime minister of Spain, a military dictatorship until 1975.The call for Mr Sánchez’s removal from power came in an open letter published on Friday on the website of the AME association of Spanish armed forces members. It is supported by 51 retired officers, according to digital newspaper infoLibre, but their names were not published with the text.Reportedly, the 51 signatories include some who were investigated over the contents of a WhatsApp chat in 2020 that discussed ousting Mr Sánchez, even though this might mean having “to kill 26 million sons of bitches”. No charges were brought.

This tiny Greek island now has zero waste – leading the way for the rest of the worldLocated about 90km east of Rhodes lies the world’s first zero-waste island. Picturesque Tilos boasts white sandy beaches, scenic rolling hills, historic architecture and no bins.In the 1980s, the island of around 800 people voted to become a conservation zone for wildlife. By 2018, they generated all their energy via renewables. This summer, Tilos was certified as Greece’s first zero-waste community. The most modern measures have been implemented to solve an age-old problem. Specially designed and trademarked blue bags have a QR code that measures volume and content. A nifty ‘Just Go Zero’ app allows every household to monitor and track the circular management of waste materials as they are recycled.Only a few years ago, 87% of waste was being sent to landfill; now the island doesn’t have one. The old landfill site is now home to the Centre for Circular Innovation where rubbish is sorted, the organic waste converted to fertiliser. There’s also a Centre for Creative Upcycling for furniture or clothes no longer needed. If successful, the island could serve as a zero-waste blueprint for the rest of the world to follow.
