Kef fire risk 10/08/23: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8877 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1297 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1265 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8852 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon (the online retailer, not the rainforest) could be heading for Kef as he's said to have been spotted on Kastos, a small island northeast of Kef. However, the supporting video posted on Twitter doesn't resemble his new yacht:

Dekapentavgoustos in Greece

If you are looking for the liveliest time to be in Greece, Dekapentavgoustos (August 15th) should definitely be on top of your list. Marking the Assumption of the Virgin Mary — one of the largest religious celebrations in the country— this period also hosts some of the greatest Panigiria (festivals).

Revealed: Government spends £230m with P&O and its owner after condemning the sacking of 800 crew

On March 17 last year, P&O Ferries fired almost 800 of its seafarers without notice or consultation and replaced them with cheaper, agency workers.

The company’s chief executive, Peter Hebblethwaite, later admitted that in doing so P&O had knowingly broken the law. He presented the decision as regrettable but necessary. He insisted that P&O Ferries was on the verge of bankruptcy and urgently needed to cut costs. The mass-sackings were brutal and they triggered widespread outrage. One of the company’s fiercest critics was the government.

Parents complain about "d*ck" and "pus*y" flavoured chips being sold in Greece

These products are of the Lithuanian chip company Chazz, which first released the controversial flavours in 2022 with a supposed vulva and penis flavour.

According to the company, the product was created on the occasion of research that shows that millennials have three times less sex than their parents at the same age.

Owners of Britain’s wonkiest pub hired digger used to demolish it days before fire
AT Contracting rented vehicle from plant hire firm before major blaze, being treated by police as arson, hit historic building

AT Contracting – owned by Carly Taylor, who bought the historic pub in Himley, near Dudley in the West Midlands, in July – rented the digger from a plant hire firm a week before the fire, which is being treated by police as arson.

It also emerged that the fire brigade’s attempts to put out the blaze were hampered by a large mound of earth that was blocking access to the site when they arrived on Saturday night.

Former regulars and the local MP are demanding that the building, known as the country’s wonkiest pub after it was affected by mining subsidence in the 19th century, is rebuilt brick by brick after the council said it was demolished without permission.

The great car insurance con: Premiums soar to record high as prices hiked 50% in a year
Exclusive: The average premium rose by 48 per cent in the 12 months to June 2023

Car insurance premiums have rocketed by almost 50 per cent over the past year, with millennials and older drivers hit hardest.

Exclusive data from the analyst Consumer Intelligence, which looks at quotes from Confused.com, Go Compare, Compare the Market and MoneySuperMarket, reveals that average premiums rose by 48 per cent on average in the 12 months to June 2023. Premiums are now at their highest since the start of 2018.

Car insurance is fast becoming one of the most expensive household bills, adding more financial pain at a time of high inflation and surging mortgage rates and rents.

According to Consumer Intelligence, those aged 25 to 39 and 65 and over have been hardest hit by car insurance rises.

It comes as executives at the top five firms were handed six- and seven-figure salaries and bonuses last year. Admiral Group gave a total of £3.3m to its executive directors, while Aviva chief executive Amanda Blanc earned £5.52m in 2022.

Top mountaineer defends walking past dying Sherpa in pursuit of K2 record
Kristin Harila says nothing could have been done about porter after footage showed people climbing over him

A top mountaineer has been forced to defend herself after accusations that her team climbed over a dying Sherpa as they headed to the summit of the K2 mountain to secure a new world record.

Images of climbers clambering past the injured Pakistani on a treacherous ridge on the same day that Norway’s Kristin Harila ascended have been condemned by fellow mountaineers.

They claimed a Western climber would not have been left to die and said the scenes would be unthinkable in the Alps, igniting a row about how local Sherpas are used in the Himalayas.

Theresa Villiers had £70,000 in Shell shares while environment secretary
MP failed to reveal shares in oil company for more than five years despite disclosure rules

A former environment secretary has revealed she has shares worth more than £70,000 in Shell that she did not disclose as required for more than five years.

Theresa Villiers was the secretary for environment, food and rural affairs from July 2019 until February 2020, but only this week disclosed she has had investments worth more than £70,000 each in Shell and the drinks company Diageo since February 2018. Villiers also disclosed shares worth more than £70,000 in Experian, held since July 2019, and in an investment trust, RIT Capital Partners.

Her disclosure follows revelations in the Guardian of the scores of MPs who held shares that were, in effect, secret.
