Kozani: They cheated an 86-year-old woman and extorted 10,000 euros and 80 pounds – One arrest

A case of fraud against an 86-year-old woman, which occurred in January in Kozani, has been solved.

The woman had then complained that an unknown person claimed that a relative of hers was involved in a traffic accident, in which he lured and killed a pedestrian.

In this way, he managed to extract from her 80 British gold pounds, worth approximately EUR 32,000, EUR 10,000 and a gold chain worth EUR 100.

The authorities, after using the information provided by the 86 year old woman and investigation, ended up with a 42 year old foreigner.

Against him, a criminal case for fraud was formed, which will be submitted to the Prosecutor of Kozani.

Wildlife shelter treats fox hit by car in Halkidiki

A wildlife shelter said it was treating a fox cub that was spotted by passing drivers on the side of the road in Halkidiki, northern Greece.

Stelios Geronymakis, from the Animal Rescue and Defense Group, told state-run AMNA news agency that they were informed by colleagues of a local veterinarian that a two-month-old fox cub, weighing 1.2 kg, had been found in the wider area of Olynthos with injuries on the right side of its head and neurological problems. “As evidence shows, it was the victim of a traffic accident,” he said.

The animal was taken to another vet who administered a drug to reduce brain pressure. The fox is  recuperating in a shelter away from people and other animals until its condition stabilizes.

State-owned satellites on the cards

The construction of the first Greek state satellites out of a total of 13 for which an open tender was announced earlier in the year will reportedly begin in a month’s time.

The satellites will be able to provide data and services to multiple agencies of the Greek government, such as the ministries of Environment, Energy, Rural Development, Climate Crisis, Civil Protection, Maritime Affairs, as well as the armed forces.

The satellites will help save significant resources as Greece currently has to buy data.

Affordable housing plan moving ahead
Private sector to construct apartment buildings on state-owned plots and rent them out at low rates

The government’s ambitious plan for affordable housing, dubbed the social compensation program, entails the construction of apartment blocks on public land with private funds and renting them out at low rates.

The program will focus on finding affordable housing for young people aged 18-39, using public properties through public-private partnerships, or PPPs.

In the first phase of the program, inactive public buildings will be reconstructed, so that they can be provided at low rent to young people or new couples.

A Mystery?.....or a Conspiracy?

Demand and Supply? Our friends in Poros aren't opening their apartments until June, just not worth the hassle. I'd think TUI, etc, would be happy to send full flights every day all year but they don't want to be committed to flying 'planes with a handful of adventurous passengers on board (IMO). March and April (even May) weather can be very variable (as we know) and a cold, washed out Spring holiday doesn't encourage return (been there, done that, had to borrow portable electric heater from accommodation owner - yes, it worked OK in studio but was useless on beach).

OK, so counter argument is that potential visitors can't be converted to actual visitors if there's no 'planes flying.

Mystery.

Of course, there's UK - Athens flights then hop a KTEL bus to Kef. Yep, it takes longer but it's more adventurous (and not too scary).

Now, if you're really adventurous (and are pretty cool with it): UK - Venice - Patras by train (and ferry). Bryan and I have been having a look at it, looks to work out more expensive, tales longer, more potential for losing your cool - but what a way to travel!!! Comfortable seats with plenty of leg room and space to stretch legs (on way to bar). And fantastic scenery as you cross Europe. If I was forty years younger...

According to Fraport, Kef airport had a slow start to summer season 2024.....Fraport considers this another indication that the season (on Kef) continues to contract.
.
We arrived this week to find everywhere very quiet indeed for this time of year.

Villas and apartments showing fully booked on their various booking sites are clearly empty and locked up.

Speaking with locals, they blame airlines for cancelling flights, especially from Northern airports.

The villas I mention are independent, with no connection to particular airlines or package holidays. So it's all jolly strange.

The desire to visit early season is there, but both accommodation and travel providers appear reluctant to assist.

A Mystery?.....or a Conspiracy?
