Lesvos: The Cultural Centre of Kalloni was destroyed by fire – 6.5 thousand volumes of rare books destroyed by fire
Completely destroyed by a fire that broke out at midnight yesterday, a building of the early 20th century in the location “Chania” of Kalloni Lesvos, which primarily housed the activities of the Kalloni Cultural Centre “Arisvi Club”.
President of the Cultural Center of Kalloni “Club Arisvi” Aristovoulos Eleftheriou [said], “were ashes 6.5 thousand volumes of rare books, many of which were published since the early 1700s, thousands of manuscripts and papyri, with recorded history mainly of Kalloni, but also of Lesvos and modern Greece." https://en.protothema.gr/lesvos-the-cultural-centre-of-kalloni-was-destroyed-by-fire-6-5-thousand-volumes-of-rare-books-destroyed-by-fire/Obviously a disaster for the local community but the rare books might not have had a great monetary value (my expert knowledge based on watching Antiques Road Trip )

NHS bosses destroy careers of whistleblowers who stand up to protect patients’ lives Talented doctors and nurses claim they have lost their jobs – with some driven to brink of suicide – as bosses sought to bury their concerns
NHS managers are destroying the careers of whistleblowers who raise concerns about patient safety, a group of medics warns.
More than 50 doctors and nurses have told The Telegraph they have been targeted after raising concerns about upwards of 170 patient deaths and nearly 700 cases of poor care. One consultant described it as “the biggest scandal within our country” and said the true number of avoidable deaths was “astronomical”.
Instead of trying to fix the problems, the whistleblowers claim NHS bosses are spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money hiring law firms and private eyes to investigate them instead, leading many medics to quit the profession in despair.
In one case, the NHS spent more than £4 million on legal action against a single whistleblower, which included £3.2 million in compensation. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/15/nhs-bosses-destroy-careers-whistleblowers-avoidable-deaths/

Beachgoers in Greece urged to snitch on firms that break sunbed rules
Greece is planning to use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to target nuisance sun lounges on beaches - while also urging the public to inform on rental firms that break the rules.
With the tourist season approaching, the country’s government is to start monitoring the position of sunbeds, umbrellas and chairs on its pristine coastlines.
It comes after a law introducing stricter rules was passed on Wednesday amid growing concerns over overcrowding and the illegal use of public space on beaches.
The new system, which will be tested in early June, will monitor almost 8,000 beaches across Greece where businesses have been granted licences to use public sands.
The government hopes the new measures will also help it in the tendering of beaches to private companies, while protecting public access to free beaches.
Concessions to operate sun lounger businesses, and build constructions, have been banned on 198 beaches in Greece, both on the mainland and on the country’s islands. These include beaches in Mani, Karpathos, Syros, Lesvos and Milos.
In other protected areas, the law states that 85 per cent of beach space cannot now be occupied by sunbeds.
It also prescribes a minimum distance of four metres between sunbeds and the shoreline, to facilitate access to the sea for holidaymakers.
Beaches are public in the country, but in recent years residents have become increasingly irked by the growing number of businesses which have been granted licences to rent out sun loungers and umbrellas. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/16/beachgoers-greece-sunbed-rules-snitch-firms-satellites-ai/

Higher global temperatures causing Caretta turtles to lay eggs sooner
The discovery of a Caretta caretta nest on May 10 in Lagana Bay, on the island of Zakynthos, has confirmed predictions that climate change will bring the turtles' nesting season forward, starting it earlier in the spring, the sea turtle protection society Archelon said in an announcement on Thursday.
According to Archelon, this is the first time in 40 years of monitoring the turtles on Zakynthos, the Peloponnese and Crete, starting in 1984, that a nest has been found so early in the season. https://www.amna.gr/en/article/819271/

Greece Offers Tax Evasion Whistleblowers Bonuses Up to 3,000 Euros
Nothing has worked to stop runaway tax evasion in Greece and now bonuses up to 3000 euros are being offered to whistleblowers who turn in businesses and professionals not giving receipts or ducking their obligations.
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is looking for tax cheats who don’t give receipts that are required, or using Point of Service (POS) machines that the agency can use to track the flow of money.
But some professionals, including doctors and lawyers and service businesses like auto repair shops as well as plumbers and handymen and contractors offer costumes lower prices if they don’t ask for receipts and say their POS machines or Internet isn’t working to prevent giving them. https://www.thenationalherald.com/greece-offers-tax-evasion-whistleblowers-bonuses-up-to-3000-euros/
