The government has decided to scrap a controversial 25-euro fee for public hospitals, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said Tuesday.Georgiadis said the fee, which came into effect on January 1, would instead be passed on to tobacco product prices, which are expected to go up by 5 cents. He said an amendment would soon be tabled in Parliament. The price hike is expected to generate some 40 million euros in revenues, in tune with government targets.
The amendment for replacing the controversial admission fee with a tobacco tax, however, was withdrawn from Parliament on Friday after Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras took exception to the exemption from the tax of cigars and cigarillos. The amendment will be redrafted and submitted on Monday.
