Authorities of Piraeus, the country's main port, and western suburbs of Athens are working to assess the damage incurred by Friday's torrential rain that carried away cars and flooded several homes, as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras ordered the release of emergency funds as of Monday to help townships with losses.

There have been no casualties from the flooding of a supermarket garage in Ilion, Secretary General of Citizen Protection Serafim Tsokas said on Saturday, adding that a total of ten municipalities have reported problems, with 250-300 cars swept away in all areas. He said that in 1.5 hours on Friday rainfall reached 14 cm, nearly 10 cm over the rainfall one could expect if it had rained normally throughout the day.

The Fire Brigade said it had received at total of 850 calls for water pumping on Friday.

Northern Greece experienced some rain, but was affected more by a sudden drop in temperatures and snow, which first fell on Thursday in northwestern Greece.

Just goes to show what happens when idiots build a city without any thought for nature.  Concrete jungle becomes concrete-lined flood river.  Twas ever thus in this jerry-built country.
